    Mr. Wagner,

Welcome to the board! Can you please add a bit of more information like what degree your are seeking, if you wanted it to be Regional accredited or National accredited, and how you will fund this degree?

    Thanks!

i would like to get a Associate in criminal justice or go for a bachelor i would like the school to be Regional accredited. All of the fund will come out from my pocket so I'm looking for a cheap school it don't have to be NCU or AIU but i would like to get more info about them.

    Thanks

If affordable is what you're looking for, neither NCU or AIU qualify.

I would suggest to go directly to a bachelor's degree. The Cheapest school in criminal justice it is possible Andrew Jackson they have sponsor tuition program, but they are no Regional Accredited university they are National accredited by the DETC. If you are in law enforcement it should meets your needs. Other later will follow with other suggestions.

AIU's tuition is much higher then 227 per course. An AA degree in criminal justice would run you 26,000 for books and the courses. If you continue and earn a BA through AIU it is another 26,000. The cost of these degrees can be paid for through federal student loans in most cases but it is lots of money. The question comes down to is it worth it? If the degree will open doors for you and add to your income then yes, but I'm sad to say that many times a degree in criminal justice doesn't open all that many doors. It can help with being hired in the field but in most cases (except for most parole or probation departments) a degree doesn't change much. A degree from a respectable school in business might open more doors. Really, it all comes down to your career goals. I have a BS in Criminal Justice from AIU and I teach special eduaction. I did at one time work probation and am looking to teach criminal justice at the community college level. I found it hard to get interviews for most jobs with an AIU BS in criminal justice.

    Just my 2 cents.

Welcome to the board. Unless you attend your local community college, $280 a course will be very difficult to come by. I believe you made a simple error in your calculation. The cost you are quoting is more than likely the price PER CREDIT HOUR, and not per class. For example:

    NCU
    $275 per credit hour
    x 3 credit course
    -------------------
    $825 per course

This is likely the calculation you will use to determine the cost of any degree your interested in. Sticking with the NCU example:

    $275 per credit hour
    x 120 credits for a bachelors degree
    -------------------
    $33,000 for the degree

This is assuming you don't use CLEP, Dantes or any other similiar credit granting resources. You can see why many members suggest attending a local community college to get the first two years out of the way. I attended a community college before I was accepted into the University of Florida back in the day. For the first 60 hours, it was only 60 dollars a credit; so roughly $180 for a 3 credit course. Even after that it was only $100-ish at UF cause Florida is one of the only states in the union that subsidizes college tuition.

If you're applying to teach at a community college with a BS degree in CJ, then I presume that you're applying to teach at the AS or AAS level because it only requires an Associates degree in the field that you want to teach, although most colleges still prefer a Bachelors in CJ. Further compounding the problem is the fact that most community colleges want to hire officers with law enforcement experience (not corrections, probation or parole experience). Consequently, your inability to land a job may not be due to your AIU BS in CJ but, instead, it may be due to your lack of experience as a patrolman, detective or special agent. Teaching at that level is a tightly controlled area e.g. the cops control it, albeit informally.

Just about any nationally accredited (DETC) or regionally accredited (RA) school offers Title IV Federal Aid (i.e. pell grants, stafford loans etc) However, it is up to the school to PARTICIPATE in this program. From what I have seen over the years, participating in Title IV Federal Aid is the rule and not the exception. Unfortunately, I just took a browse over at AJU and they do not participate in Title IV Federal Aid:

    http://www.aju.edu/Admissions/admis_FAQ.asp#finaid

You might be able to receiver private education loans but you would have to check with the university. In practice, I do not recommend taking out private school loans unless you absolutely have to. For instance, when my fiancee was in medical school, her federal aid was short of her final years cost of attendence by 10k-ish. To cover that difference, she got a private student loan through Next Student. Out of all money she borrowed, dealing with private student loan was, in comparison to Federal Aid, taxing. Adding insult to injury, private loans carry higher interest rates and sometimes higher origination costs. Just some things you should consider if you need to finance your higher education.

In terms of schools that offer this type of aid in the subject your interested, American Military University, a University I attended, might have something your looking for:

    http://www.amu.apus.edu/Academics/Degree-Programs/program.htm?progid=4175&program_type=Bachelors

or the university's sister intitution, American Public University offers the same program:

    http://www.apu.apus.edu/Academics/Degree-Programs/program.htm?progid=4175&program_type=Bachelors

There are many others, but that should get the ball rolling :)

Andrew Jackson University offers an Associate of Science in Criminal Justice for only the cost of semester fees and books; there is no tuition if you sign-up through one of their partners. Andrew Jackson University is nationally accredited (DETC).

Southwestern College offers a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and accepts credit hours from nationally accredited (DETC) courses and degrees in transfer towards the bachelor degree. Southwestern College is regionally accredited (NCACS).

This route would earn you a regionally accredited bachelor degree in criminal justice at a reasonably low monetary cost.

Excelsior offers a BS with a major in CJ
    https://www.excelsior.edu/Excelsior_College/School_of_Liberal_Arts/Bachelors_Degrees_in_Liberal_Arts/BS_with_a_Major_in_Criminal_Justice

Excelsior is a great way to obtain a degree - you can obtain course credits from a wide variety of souces including standardized tests (such as CLEP), community colleges, other colleges and Excelsior courses. You can complie your courses then apply for admission when you have collected around a hundred or so semester units.

Thomas Edison also offer a CJ degree.

Check their sites for more info including degree requirements and fees.

Not according to this news release.

I don't understand why you would choose to apply to AIU for a $20,480+ AA!! source (pdf). My local community college is $76.60 per credit...keep shopping.

    TEKMAN Semper Fi!

AIU is expensive, their tuition is in quarter credit not semester. Where 1.5 QH = 1 SH.

Anyway, Troy University offers Associate and Bachelor in Criminal Justice. $200.00 per credit, 5 terms per year. You can take CLEP and DANTES, maybe FEMA upto 60 credits for General Education, Elective and Minor.

I had done it, only 60 credits from them, and the rest from credit banks. It costed me $2,000.00 out of pocket for textbooks and some fee, and $10,000.00 from DoD.
