    Hello everyone,

I have a B.A. degree but would like to organize into a B.S. degree the assorted science courses I took as an undergraduate. Can anyone recommend a flexible, generalistic B.S. biology-related program that might accept transfer credits with minimal additional courses required?

    Thank you!

    second BA

Hello, My husband will be meeting with his advisor on Tuesday in reference to his second BA. He is trying to go from a BA - Economics to a BA Liberal Studies. He will be graduating from TESC. If you are going to a applied science major I'd check out the FEMA EMI Independent Study. TESC accepts them and they vary in difficulty and length. They've been discussed so you can search them out in this forum. I had to call EMI in reference to a testing question and found them to be pleasant, organized, and helpful. Good luck in your educational journey. Hille ***Check out Lawrie Millers' website for some great ideas.

Would a masters degree really be cheaper than a second BA/BS?

I guess it depends on where you are and where you go.. But if you were to transfer a good portion of the first degree's credits, I can't imagine being as expensive as forking out >30 graduate credits worth of courses?

Maybe I don't understand the rules of earning a second bachelors? You wouldn't havt to start from scratch would you?

    Regards,
    Bill

  5. It varies, but here is a quote from the UMUC web-site:
    • For a second bachelor’s degree, the student needs to complete at least 30 semester hours through UMUC after completing the first degree. The new set of 30 semester hours needs to consist of at least 21 semester hours in the student’s new primary specialization (including at least 15 semester hours at the upper-level) and a minimum of 9 semester hours consisting of an upper-level writing course, a computer course, and an international perspective course, unless satisfied by the previous degree. The combined credit in both degrees must add up to at least 150 semester hours.

    second degree

Check into Excelsior. I believe they will accept up to 90 hours of credit if you already have a degree. That leaves you with 30 credits to get your second BS.

    Second Bachelors Degree

Good Morning, I suggest you try TESC for your second BS. My husband is currently in this process and had some good results from his appointment with his advisor. He is using FEMA credits for 11 of the 30 needed for his second degree. They have been discussed at length. I think TESC may be the only college that accepts them without conversion from Frederick CC. I hope this gives you an idea. Have a peaceful day. Hille

    Re: Second Bachelors Degree

It may be worth pointing out on this thread that most institutions have a policy of not granting a third bachelor's degree. (Just in case that was someone's bigger plan.)

    God bless us, everyone.

Normally you would be expected to complete 30 semester hours new credit. Excelsior College will accept existing credit comprising that 30, if said credit was earned after conferral of your first degree, and is unrelated to the concentration/major of your first degree.

You can earn the minimum required 30 hours new credit (with minumum 15 credits upper division) for a BS with concentration at Excelsior College using a relevant single, 2 hour 50 minute GRE subject exam. The method is detailed in the BA in 4 Weeks "guide to earning a second degree in under three hours", accessible at: http://www.geocities.com/ba_in_4_weeks/2ndDegree.html

Links to test materials and exam registration are also provided, as are recommended revision materials for certain of the available subject disciplines.

See also the guide section entitiled "Testing Out", for more info on the GRE subject exams.

    http://www.geocities.com/ba_in_4_weeks/Examtips.html

Note that there is a Biology GRE subject exam available. Cost of the test is currently $130.

    Re: Re: Second Bachelors Degree

Excelsior College and others may allow a third bachelor's degree on petition to the dean of the relevant school. See the current Excelsior college Liberal Arts Catalog, "Selected Policies and Procedures" (Third degree policy), page 52.

(A long ago perusal of graduate degree listings in the then Regents College, Electronic help board, detailed several members with three Regents degrees).

Good point. I probably should have said that the original poster will have to jump through some hoops if he is thinking about a third bachelor's degree.

In my case, Regents shot me down. I had a BS in psychology and a Regents degree in operations management and wanted to finish a math degree. (As it turns out, my original alma mater has started listing my major as mathematics on my transcripts anyway. Go figure.)

Re: Re: Re: Re: Second Bachelors Degree

Though not a factor in Tommy's case (seems his first degree from a different institution) . . .
I should have included the general point that due to NY state regulations, Excelsior will not award two degrees in the same degree program. For instance, BS with Psychology concentration, and BA with concentration in Mathematics. Both of these would have to be in the Liberal Arts program, and that's not allowed. However, if the first Lib Arts degree was conferred by another institution, then it would be possible to earn a second such Lib Arts degree from Excelsior (in different concentration, of course).

This does not preclude the possibility of earning two (or even three - see previous posts) degrees at Excelsior in different Excelsior College bachelor degree programs. Excelsior offers degree programs in Liberal Arts (with various concentrations), Business, Technology/computing, and Nursing.]

    Re: Second Bachelors Degree

    Hmmm.
Question: While liberal art and business and nursing clearly constitute "different degree programs," what about a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science? Are these different degree progams? Or not?

    COSC clearer about...

I'd say that Charter Oak is clearer about what, and how, a second
Bachelors degree qualifies for the award--to wit:

“The second [baccalaureate] degree must be in a different field from the first one….

To earn a second baccalaureate degree a student must:

-earn a minimum 30 semester credits subsequent to the award of the initial degree,
-earn a least 15 of the subsequent credits at the upper level or higher in the new Concentration,
-meet general and Concentration requirements, and
-apply no more than 9 credits from an earlier major or concentration toward the new Concentration.”

    --Charter Oak Official Catalog, 2000-2002, p. 28."

    options

If one is able to follow the excelsior route and earn a second B. through thre GRE test and other tests, that does sound fairly simple
However, if one does have to earn 30 additional credits, I would explore the masters degree options. In general (but not specifically) one is better off with a masters than a 2nd bachelors.
    All the best!

    Right, but...

In gerneral, Irat, I quite agree with you. And certainly with the COSC requirement that there be 30 NEW credits, the message is definitely an encouragement to Move UP! academically speaking.

However, there is quite a difference between the time nearly all master's degrees require--if only because of the depth of learning entailed thereby--and the time a new concentration takes to be documented, even if it involves some correspondence or traditional classroom work!

It's more the latter case that I had in mind than the former...

    thanks.

    Re: Re: Second Bachelors Degree

These are both degrees in the Liberal Arts degree program. You cannot earn two Liberal Arts degrees from Excelsior even though one may be a BA and the other a BS. See my previous post this thread and, "Second Degree Policy", Liberal Arts catalog, page 52. http://www.excelsior.edu/pdf/cat_la.pdf

Hello, I wanted to thank all again who assisted me in guiding my husband through his second BA. Tomorrow is his graduation day. This was accomplished through 18 FEMA credits, 6 credits from a CLEP, 2 TECEPS, one that negated his original English 101 grade, and 6 credits from our local community college. Have a great July week. Hille
