I do believe Rich was referring to DETC's heritage as, originally, the National Home Study Council. And they still accredit schools offering meat cutting, truck buying, jewelry repair, diamond grading, quack medicine*, air conditioning repair, and, yes, carpentry and plumbing.

Nevertheless, folks with these trades skills are putting food on the table while PhD holders are a dime a dozen!

Are PhD's a dime a dozen? I don't personally know too many. I must be hanging out with the wrong crowds.

As for plumbers, I know for a fact they make better money than me. Have you seen what it costs to fix a water leak at 2AM on a weekend?

DETC does accredit vocational career programs, but they also accredit recognized degree programs to now include professional doctorates. DETC was originally vocation specific, and for several decades they've had degree programs that continue to expand and prosper. Many, if not all, of the DETC degree granting schools do NOT offer the above mentioned programs, so don't lump this as all inclusive. There is nothing wrong with the vocational schools that DETC accredits and it serves as a needed populous niche.
