I went to my history department chair's office this afternoon. She mentioned to me that a major university was going to offer a history PhD online. She told me she read it in the Chronicle of Education or Inside HigherEd this past week. Has anyone heard of this? I am not trying to stir up a rumor, but she can not remember the school nor which publication. Has anyone heard this?

No, but I'd be interested to hear about it if anyone knows.

For the life of me, I can not find it. I am a librarian too. LOL

Sam Houston State University's website www.shsu.edu (their page listing graduate programs) claims that they are offering the PhD in History (but they don't say online or on-ground), though I can find no further info.

No it is not Sam Houston State University. I know that Sam Houston has their program ready to roll out Ted, they are just waiting on the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for the final approval. They were wanting to start it in August 2008, but I am not sure that will happen. Dr Olsen is the advisor. Great. He is a class act. I really like him. I met him 4 years ago through Dr Kellar at the University of Houston. I have used Dr Olsen's book Where The Domino Fell for my History 1302 classes. She told me she thought it was a university either midwest or northern midwest. I can also tell you that the first class will be very very small. That is all I know.

Goodness, an almost three year old thread. No, my department chair never was able to find that B and M PhD history online that was quoted in the Chronicle of Higher Education. As of now, no US history departments offer a PhD in History online.

A little off-topic but I think Jason deserves some kudos for the thread necromancy. Instead of starting another thread he researched and found one related to his question. Impressive. He might actually be alright in his chosen field, since he can do a little research.

Even more off topic, but still History related: I had a little sliver of my GI Bill left and I wanted to use it all up. So I finally get to take a class that I will enjoy. I'm taking HIST560 World War II in Context at AMU. School does not suck so bad when you are taking a course where you actually enjoy, and find interesting, the subject you are learning about.

Hell yes to both observations you make!

Wow, you aren't kidding about that one. Business courses made me want to bash my skull in. I did well in them, but I found them insufferably boring, with the ironic exception of accounting. I found accounting fascinating, but I generally enjoy numbers anyway.

Sorry if I am way late to this discussion, but I just happened upon it while looking for some info.

Is there any way, what-so-ever, to obtain a Ph.D. in History completely online?

I am moving to Saint Simons Island, GA, and cannot seem to find a University close enough to commute.
