Earlier this month I completed the requirements for the B.A. Computer Science degree at Lakeland College via distance learning and will officially graduate on the last day of this year. I am very happy about having achieved this, but I'll hold off doing the "Snoopy dance" until I actually hold the sheepskin in my hands. I really don't expect any hiccups--I've already made it onto the alumni association's mailing list.

Though I have not posted many messages on this board, I have been an avid reader of the fora here since the board was created as a haven from the devolution of alt.education.distance. I have learned much about distance education, many schools and degree programs, and about becoming educated. I thank you all.

A special note of thanks to Dr. John Bear. His articles in a.e.d. got me to thinking that distance learning might well be a practical way for me to earn the bachelor's degree I had been working on intermittently for years. Attending on-campus classes while working full-time was very difficult. I managed to earn an A.A. that way, but a frequently-changing work schedule resulted in many missed classes and dropped courses along the way.

Armed with what I learned from reading the 13th edition of Bears' Guide, I found a suitable on-line degree program offered by a regionally accredited school. I'll digress here to thank also Mariah Bear, the co-author of that book. I suppose that I might have eventually completed an on-campus bachelor's degree program, but earning the A.A. had been such a struggle that I was close giving up on higher education altogether. I am certain that completing an on-campus program would have taken me much longer than completing an on-line program did.

Now if you'll pardon me, I've a honey-do list that's longer than I am tall that I have to start working on. I'll have to make considerable progress on it before I'll be allowed to even consider a master's degree progam.

    Cheers,

    Lowell

Dosen't it feel great to finish a degree program? What a perfect ending to 2007. Congratulations! What are you going to do now? Do you plan to continue or are you going to take a breather for awhile?

    Merry Christmas!

Yes......a congrats to you as well.
[rasing the mug up for a cheers!]

The worst part is now over, the long and winding road of an undergraduate degree.... believe me, go for the Master's - it will be a lot easier than you realize - not to mention it will be extremely valuable in the long run, especially career wise!

    Congrats again!

Great work! I know what you mean about waiting to do the Snoopy dance, I had the same "Is this real?" feeling before my degree arrived in the mail!

I agree- my masters was easier because I did not have to play the "which classes or CLEPs do I need now" game. Only 9 classes from one school - no problem!

Good for you, Lowell. Thanks for sharing the news . . . and for the kind words, which I am passing along to Mariah. (The large British publishing company where she is executive editor has been bought by an even larger Swedish publishing company, and she plans to explore with them whether there might be an interest in doing a Bears' Guide sort of book, since Ten Speed clearly has no intention of keeping it going.)
