I contacted the mother of the girl, and offered to help. I understand someone else from this board is trying to contact her via Channel 7 TV.

I asked her for a transcript and will keep you guys updated. I hope we can use our knowledge of DL to help her since FIU will not.

I also agree that FIU should make an exception in this case... but does she want a degree from a DL institution? I read the story and it seems to me that she would like to graduate from FIU, since she took all the courses there...

According to the reporter, Kristina and her family are open to suggestion, as long she can get her BA.

Thank you Carlos and Vinipink and everyone else. I hope she's able to get a degree from any institution before she passes on. She's worked so hard and it would be a shame. I mean, this sounds like something Make-A-Wish Foundation should be able to help with.

..you never know, with all the negative publicity FIU has received over this, they may change their mind yet!

She may have already done enough to earn a BGS from Athabasca University.

    Bachelor of General Studies
    (three years—90 credits)
    Program Objectives
The Bachelor of General Studies degree is one of the most popular programs at Athabasca University. It provides a framework of individualized study within an Arts and Science or Applied Studies designation, with freedom to choose courses to meet career or educational goals. Unlike the other degrees offered by Athabasca University, the Bachelor of General Studies does not have a residency requirement. Degree requirements may be completed at institutions other than Athabasca University.
The Bachelor of General Studies degree requires completion of 90 credits and is comparable to a three-year program. Students may specialize or diversify their course selection, subject to the following requirements. While students are free to develop their own intellectual and academic interests, this does not mean that course selection should be casual. Students should ensure their vocational or personal needs are well defined. All courses transferred to this degree must be university-level credit as determined by Athabasca University faculty.

Students in the Bachelor of General Studies degree must choose either an Applied Studies designation or an Arts and Science designation.

    Contact info for FIU

The name of the President of FIU is Modesto A. Maidique, phone number: Tel: (305) 348-2111

For FIU not to consider to award this young lady a degree is just wrong.

I called the school and spoke to the president's office today. I was told that FIU is reviewing the matter. I reminded the Administrative Assistant to the President that this was the right thing to do, especially since most people associate FIU with the brawl vs. The University of Miami last football season. She was very agreeable and my gut call is that FIU will award the bachelors degree
