I know this has been talked about before, but math is one of my worst subjects. I need an online/independent study math class (not from LSU) that doesn't have too many assignments and very few proctored tests that I can get through pretty quickly. Since I'm taking an American Government class at SPC this summer, that math class is all that stands between me and my first degree. The school has to be RA and the class preferrably won't have a pre-requisite or a placement test requirement. I tried Keiser College because they are RA and their classes last only one month, but the cost was way, way high ($1500). Anyone have any advice? I already have 3 credits in Math for Liberal Arts, so I'm looking for something like statistics, business math, college algebra, or something similar. If I can't find a class, I will consider taking the College Mathematics CLEP test, but since I stink at math, that will probably be a last resort sort of thing.
You might want to try this... http://www.clovis.edu/Enrollment/ClassSchedules/Summer/ClassDetail.asp?CallNumber=10155 The cost is dirt cheap also... http://www.clovis.edu/FinancialInfoAid/TuitionFees/index2.asp?Term=Summer Shawn
Check out http://www.distancelearning.ufl.edu/Courses.aspx Since you already have math for liberal arts, you might want to check MGF 1107, Math for Liberal Arts II. Tuition should be about what you pay at SPC.
edowave: Thanks. I may try UF's statistics class (STA 2023) because it will satisfy my degree requirements AND in speaking to WGU, if I have a statistics class on my transfer records I can clear another competency unit.
You could take Penn Foster College's Algebra course. It is self-paced, most of the courses are online, except for the proctored exam at the end. The school is not RA, but the course has been reviewed by ACE. The cost is about $55 per credit hour. It also has a Business Math course, which I have taken. I have never been good at math, but I pulled 90's on my exams in this course. I also like the fact that all of the lessons had business applications. Brigham Young University offers a 3 credit College Algebra course online for $390. It has three online exams and one final proctored exam. I didn't see any prerequisites. http://ce.byu.edu/is/site/courses/description.cfm?subject=75&course=MATH110College%2520Algebra
That would probably be the way to go for you. I took STA 2023 when I was an undergrad and it was an excellent class. (I didn't take online however.)
If you can bang out two requirements at once - go for it. FYI, in order to take any math course at Clovis Community College, you either have to have the prerequisite from Clovis or another college, OR take the Accuplacer test. http://www.collegeboard.com/highered/apr/accu/accu.html#internet I called Clovis today, getting ducks in a row for my 14 year old daughter to take Intermediate Algebra in the fall. Steve, What about UC Boulder's self-paced courses? There's MATH-1011-650 - Fundamentals and Techniques of College Algebra. The prereq is one year high school algebra (says: "It is assumed that students undertaking this course have passed at least one year of high school algebra. However, an alert, conscientious student should have no trouble pursuing the outlined course of study without any special preparation. "). Course Pace: Self-paced Course Type: Print Correspondence Course Assignments: 20 lessons, 4 exams. Tuition: $591 See: http://www.colorado.edu/cewww/WELCOME_PAGES/MATH1011WELCOME.htm.
I ended up registering for STA 2023 (Introduction to Statistics) at U of F. Thanks for the advice, guys!
Good luck. If you are ever in the Gainesville area and need a review for an exam, I highly recommend these guys: http://www.tutoringzone.com/sta2023services.asp Even if you are not in the area, for $20 they will basically give you unlimited help via email.
