The classes are available for later review, but most professors count live attendance as part of the final grade. In each class I've attended so far (I'm taking my 6th class now), there are at least a few students attending from overseas, so it is possible. Just make sure the time works for you when you sign up for the course and you should be fine.

Do you know the timing of these live classes based on your experience? That will help me. Thanks.

You can check out the course schedules here...just click on "Guest", then "Course Search", then select the term you want, "Graduate" for division and "IAE" for department. Most of the classes I've taken are held in the evenings, starting around 7:30 PM EST. They also have Saturday classes, although I've never taken any of those.

I'm absolutely sure. Generally, each course has a portion of the grade that is associated with participation. That is, you must contribute in some manner. . . It usually ends up being about 10% of your grade. Most of the people that I've taken courses from do not worry too much about this, but I took one course where the professor had some system where you had to speak so many times over the duration of the course to get full credit.

My guess is, with the exception of one instructor, you could take the course in Japan. The college uses Centra, so you can download and replay any class that you are registered in, so you wouldn't need DVD's.

That being said, I wouldn't recommend that you attend with the anticipation that you are going to miss every class. You really get a lot of good information in the text chat (which isn't recorded) between students. Additionally, the courses are structured like regular B&M courses, and deadlines for projects, exams, labs etc. are all geared around Eastern Time, so if you aren't going to be able to attend class, this might be a problem too.

I'm currently in Irving; the orientation on University of Dallas campus was very engaging. The GSM dean is quite charismatic. Food was great. Staff was available to answer questions. A couple of individual and team building exercises were held. The admin definitely emphasizes online learning. All things considered, this has been a good experience thus far.

Oh yeah, beer is served in the Ratskeller on campus every Thursday evening.

If you live in Virginia, these self paced courses are very economical at under $300 per credit

I agree with Steve, I am a graduate of Capitol College and it is an outstanding program for Information Security. I know there are very few Centers of Academic Excellence that offer MBAs emphasizing InfoSec (www.Security.isu.edu) and none of them online. I would only go to one of these schools and Capitol is my number #1 choice. There are 6 standards that can be met with 3 of the standards having three levels of E for Entry Level, I for Intermediate Level and A for Advanced Level. Capitol meets all six of them and 3 of them at the advanced level. There are 4 colleges that meet all 6 standards. Of those four, only two schools have met 3 standards at the advanced level. It is definitely one of the many reasons I chose this school.

Only two schools to have advanced status:
    Capitol College 4011, 4012, 4013A, 4014A, 4015, 4016A
    University of Tulsa 4011, 4012, 4013A, 4014A, 4015, 4016A

Link to list of schools and the standards they qualify for:

If you want respect and a program that will offer an excellent education, then choose Capitol.

I hope this info helps, Sean

Sean, that's excellent advice you write. I couldn't agree more about Capitol College. In regards to standards, I chose number 3, University of Dallas, primarily because the school represents a "backyard brand" for me. Curriculum through UD at least includes all NSTISSI/CNSSI standards even though some have the entry-level designation. The programs offered through Capital College are top-notch, no doubt. Tuition costs are almost equal to UD. It was a difficult choice, but my employer foots the bill for each class. I thought better to choose a more regional school.

Incidentally, UD has an online MBA with IA focus, and it's ACBSP-accredited. Currently, I'm simply pursuing a grad certificate in IA, which, combined with my studies through Duquesne for an MSLIT (financed by GI Bill), comes out to an extremely full plate.

SeanSt and/or SteveJM...could you describe the typical workload in the IA program. Papers, multiple choice test, quizes, based on attendance etc? Any information would be appreciated :)

From what I've seen so far, it varies by instructor, but it's mainly papers, lab exercises, attendance (depending on instructor), and usually two exams: a mid-term and a final, one of which is proctored. Hope that helps!

The program offers two type of courses. 8 week and 16 weeks. There are weekly live and online sessions each week for the 8 week course and alternating live and online sessions for the 16 week courses. The live session is handled through Centra and the online sessions and homework assignments are done through Blackboard. Like Steve said, there are writing assignments, labs, online discussions, live classes, attendance, exams and student study sessions using Centra. I really enjoyed the program and highly recommend it. I built friendships and contacts in the program that I am using today. So if you want a solid program that delivers on all 6 standards while meeting 3 of them at the advanced level (Only 2 NSA CAE schools have met this), you will walk away with a degree that is well respected. I would return to Capitol in a heartbeat if they offered a PhD but I am going to another school for it.

    Good Luck on your choice.
