I was hoping for some input. I am interested in pursuing a DBA or DBL with a GAAP school. The reason I was interested in GAAP as I want to keep the cost low. I looked at the DBL with UNISA but it requires travel and I need an entirely 100% distance degree. I presently have a PhD with Century in Healthcare Management (I know, I know). However, I really have an interest in another research degree at this time.

Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks.

    Hi Colleen,

How low of cost are you talking about?

    Distance law degrees

I see that you are a Taft student. I am curious. Do law firms hire students from distance law programs? Maybe it makes little difference unless you are going after the top firms. Maybe it's the bar that makes the only difference.

    Hi greentrain,

I think most of the law firms will probably be hesitant to hire students from DL law schools, even with passing the bar. Most of the DL law graduates I heard of were either sole proprietors or working for small law firms.

I'm not a lawyer but I know plenty of them. Many have passed the bar and went to regular brick and mortar law schools(their jobs are nothing remotely close to law). They tell me that it's nearly impossible to go hang a shingle after law school. One might do it but they tell me that law school doesn't teach one how to be a lawyer. I guess a small law firm would be the way to go. Get a little experience and then get the shingle I guess.

UNISA has a few PhD programs in business that can be earned without any travel....if you are able to negotiate it with the right adviser.

There are rumors of a few European programs that can be completed without travel/residency but I don't have any proof of that.

Univ of Southern Queensland (USQ) has a DBA that requires one short trip for a "DBA Dissertation Workshop" that can be completed at universities other than USQ. RFValve is attending this DBA program (I think) and can provide more info if you'd like it. THe USQ DBA website: http://www.usq.edu.au/handbook/2007/DBAR.html

The workshop is normally organized in different places on the world so a trip to Australia might not be necessary.

Exams are proctored at USQ examination centres, there are few in the US and Canada.

This is a 3 year full time or 5 year part time program. For more details look at the web site. If you have an MBA in you area of specialization you might shorten the program by 4 of the 24 required units.

The price is about 24K AUD that is not so far from the cost at NCU in the US.

The University is pursuing AACSB accreditation so that might be a plus but I'm sure that tuition will increase after they get it.

Intake is only once a year and after a research proposal is approved.

If time is a concern, I would look at the US options that seem to be doable in less time. USQ is not prestigious so you are getting an average degree from a government Australian University.

I looked at the UNISA site and these PhDs did not jump out at me. Can you give me more information? Do they have a DBA?

24k was more than I wanted to spend. The 5 years is no problem. I have an MSM so some credits could probably be waived. Thanks for any information.
