I will complete my 30-hour Ed.S. in Educational Leadership and Instruction from Northwestern State University of Louisiana--all done entirely online. It's a great program and a real steal. This semester, for example, 12 hours (4 courses) ran about $1600.

Here's the issue: I would like to transfer into an Ed.D. or Ph.D. program my 30 hours and complete the degree with no residency. Is this possible and does anyone have any ideas of schools that might work with me.

For the Ed.S., I did a research project in lieu of the thesis (I did a thesis for my Master of Arts in Humanities from Cal State Dominguez Hills (www.csudh.edu/hux), known more affectionately as the HUX program). Northwestern State gives the option of a thesis or a project if a thesis was completed at the masters level, regardless of the major.

Is there a B & M institution that might be willing to work with me about completing the Ed.D. or Ph.D. and waive the on-campus visits?

I look forward to reading everyone's thoughts. By the way, if anyone is interested, check out www.nsula.edu. It's Northwestern State's website, and NSU offers several totally online degree options, but they seem to be overlooked on degreeinfo and other such boards. I don't know the reasons. NSU is a member of the University of Louisiana system.

Capella University might be an option. While a bit costly, there are 3 residencies of 5 days each offered throughout the country. I am writing my diss proposal right now and I am a very satisfied Capella learner.

    Thanks basrsu,

The Ed.S. program looks interesting and I appreciate the info. I tried to do more research on it but the website doesn't offer much more than a generic description and contact information.

I've been on the lookout for a RA affordable (i.e. non-NCU, non-NSU, etc.) doctorate either non-resident or low residency so I'm looking forward to reading the advice of others.

As an original Alt.Distance.Ed contributor and one who interacted from opposite sides on some issues with you, I ask, why don't you hang out with us any more?

Is it that there are now too many Ph.D.'s floating around and now the terrain is more level? :D

Or is it that you are making tons of money trucking?

Somone said that you were going to school again. Is that so? What are you studying, if so?

Doesn't the "Capella Sucks" guy call himself Capella Stinks over at degreeboard?

    basrsu,

Just wanted to send you a note of thanks. I hadn't heard of Northwestern State University of Louisiana until I read your post yesterday and after combing through their website and giving it a lot of thought I came to the conclusion that it really is an outstanding program for my purposes.

Plus, it's reasonably priced (actually the tuition is cheaper than my local B&M state university), accredited, and online. If I play my cards right I'm hoping to be able to knock a year and tens of thousands of dollars off my Ed.D/Ph.D. work.

I applied yesterday and arranged to have my GRE scores, transcripts and references sent as soon as possible. For those of you interested: the GRE score required is 800, they require 2 letters of reference, a B average in your master's work, & a $25 application fee.

Tuition breaks down to about $133 per unit:

    Hours...Tuition
    1..........$431
    2..........$460
    3..........$489
    4..........$611
    5..........$748
    6..........$870
    7..........$992
    8..........$1114
    9..........$1530
    10.........$1554
    11.........$1578
    12.........$1601

    Once again ... THANK YOU!

No problem. For some odd reason, there's never much discussion about NSU of Louisiana on the discussion boards, and I think it must be because they don't recruit or advertise. They're extremely low profile.

May I give you a direct contact who will help to lead you in the Ed.S. at NSU? Her name is Dr. Karen McFerrin, the major advisor for the program. She is extraordinarily helpful, and her email address is [email protected]. Drop her a note, and she'll happily reply.

I have recruited two other people into the program, and they are both extremely happy. I think you will be as well. Not to mention, you'll be saving heaps of money!

    My best,
    basrsu

Depending on the classes, NCU will accept "30 credits into the Doctoral programs for relevant graduate course work."

    Hi,

Do you mind me asking what your concentration was in the master's of arts in Humanities program at HUX? I'm interested in their program.

    Thanks much,

    Actually, believe it or not:

NCU accepts the entire 30-hour Ed.S. from Northwestern State, plus 15 hours from a master's program. . .they count as elective hours on the Ph.D. or Ed.D. program. This cannot be found anywhere on the website--only from the enrollment counselors when you speak personally with them.

That means that NCU will accept up to 45 hours into the Ph.D. or Ed.D. program, leaving the student with only 36 hours (24 of which are dissertation hours) to complete! It's almost unbelievable, but it's true. . .I know because this situation is happening to me. :)

    Who?

Sorry, Blackbird, but I didn't see this post until today. I don't hang out much on any of the boards, and haven't for a few years now. You'll see that, as of today, my total posts here is less than 300, at degreediscussion.com it's less than 175.

I wasn't aware that there are too many Ph.D.'s, only that there are too many inferior Ph.D.'s.

I am, but that has nothing to do with it. I did my thing for non-traditional education (a term I have always preferred to distance education, much of which is mickey-mouse, accredited as well as non-accredited).

Not true. I take a professional course occasionally, but have no desire for additional degrees.

Suffice to say that I'm alive and well on The Road, and happily retired from the wacky world of higher education.

John Spies, I do not know to whose post you are responding.

However, if it's my post about NCU taking 45 transfer hours into the doctoral programs in education, as I wrote, you cannot find anything on the website. You must call an enrollment counselor. Again, if you have an Ed.S. of 30 hours (which most, but not all, are), NCU can possibly take the 30 hours--depending upon your concentration--plus 15 hours from your master's as elective hours for a total of 45, leaving you with 36 hours left for the doctorate.
