I applied to Nova back at the end of 2005. They sent a letter stating that they were not declining me, they just wanted me to retake my admissions test and get a higher score. I took the GRE and resubmitted my application. I still have not heard anything and the app was submitted in mid February. I have called and they keep saying it's still at committee, and then sometimes I can't get anyone on the phone that knows anything. Does it normally take this long? I wanted to start classes this fall.

What program did you apply for?

I guess it depends on the school. With the School of Education, I never had problems with the admissions staff. I would continue to call and push them though. Don't give up.

Nova has been having labor-related problems (and staff salary issues) that may or may not be impacting on you. Clerk-relared "glitches" set me back a year in my program - which I finished and is one reason why I applied to NCU to finish my dissertation.

Sorry to hear that Nova didn't work for you. How are you liking your experience at NCU so far?

I'm still ABD at Nova - just exploring my options.

NCU just finished my review - told me I needed 39 credits to finish (I was expecting 18-24). The first class they said I needed was LTM 5000 - Educational Applications of the Internet - an "introduction to the internet" type of class. I politely asked them if a mistake had been made (Ed.S in Computing Technology, Associate Professor - CIS at an RA school, MCSE+I, CCNA, etc.) and they politely immediately bumped me into a review with the dept. faculty.

To their credit, the outlined degree plan was slickly done.

We'll see what happens. If NCU REALLY thinks I need five extra classes (Intro to the Internet?) - I'll stick with NSU.

I spoke with someone a couple of days ago and she said that they have gotten a few calls similiar to mine. They are looking into it and she said that the program director would call me back. So I am hoping for the best. It's almost been a year since I have taken a course and that's a year wasted for me. I started at Argosy but I think Nova's program would be a better fit for me.

That does seem excessive. I can understand the need to complete 24 credits if the prior coursework is an exact match for the degree program or the need to complete a couple additional courses if the prior coursework was a close match for the program.

Did you apply for NCU’s Education Technology Management for Online Teaching and Learning Specialization or the E-Learning and Teaching Online Specialization? They appear to be the closest to NSU’s Computing Technology in Education although, the Computing Technology in Education program appears to be a bit more computer science oriented while NCU’s programs appear to be more education oriented.

Hopefully NCU will come to their senses and let you continue as a true ABD; otherwise, I’d go back to NSU [if I were you] as well.

I seriously considered NSU’s PhD in Computing Technology in Education but since I don’t work in an educational career field, NCU’s program is less expensive and fits the bill.

And in fact what struck me is that they ARE VERY simliar. NSU is perhaps a little more techy (NCU has no course that focuses on (has you design and build in fact) databases. The NCU crowd (as opposed to NSU) moves fast...this morning in my e-mail:

"I have some good news for you. It has been determined we can accept all but 14 units in transfer from NSU.

Your program is now considered ABD...The 24 units of the dissertation and research modules are required – none can be waived - in order for your degree program with Northcentral University be academically sound and institutionally correct...to obtain an Ed.D in Education Technology Management for Online Teaching and Learning."

I can live with that - so I am NCU bound.

An additional plus is that I will have my Ed.S from NSU and my Ed.D from NCU - a little resume enhancement.

    Now that's more like it!

All you have left is the comprehensive course, the four research modules, and the three dissertation modules – in other words, the 24 credit hours necessary to satisfy what NCU refers to as "doctoral coursework."

Are you starting anytime soon with the first research course and/or the comprehensive course?

Already started - I'm very pleased with the "military rate". It's the same 24 credits as at NSU and substantially more affordable - I've blown thru my GI bill, and tuition reimbursement.

I may visit www.prosper.com for a loan - very cool web site.

How well did Nova receive your DETC credits?
Did they give you any problems in the beginning?

NCU is certainly the most affordable RA online university in the country (as far as I'm aware of).

I get so irritated with people who can't come up with anything better than "what?".
Now pay attention. You mentioned in another thread that you have a masters from ISIM. I imagine that you are referring to DETC accredited Aspen University
(formerly known as ISIM)? Or where you talking about another university?

    Thanks

And the one has zip to do with the other - and I'm a still a bit mystified as to why you would think there is any relationship of any kind - not that I'm curious.

You know what I said and I’m not going to waste my time playing mind games with you.
If you don't want to talk about your DETC degree because you are ashamed of it then fine, but please don't waste my time with nonsense.

    Mike,

Let's be clear here - out of the blue you link my ISIM MS to my Nova Ed.S - even tho one is DETC and one is RA - there is no linkage.

Please direct any anger at your failure to properly "lead into" the discussion at yourself.

    Have a nice Day ;)
