I heard on the news last night that gas could rise as high as five dollars a gallon.

I don't believe our economy is ready for that.

Over here gas costs the highest I´ve ever seen: $6.80 per gallon.

It is due in part to an exccess of demand.

    Gas

Does that take in consideration the transfer rate or is that your currency cost?

Who would have thought it would be ready for three dollars per gallon? But I see that you're saying. At what point will people significantly cut back on driving? Five dollars a gallon? Ten?

    Re: Gas

The local price per gallon here is $6.35-6.40 with the current exchange rate.

In Europe, I understand that gas is much more expensive because the tax per gallon is much higher than in the USA.

    Re: Re: Gas

I've lived in places where gas was between $6 - $8 a gallon, and that was considered the norm!

Americans will panic when the price goes to $3.50 a gallon, but when it drops down to $3.00, everything is hunky dory again.

Then when it goes to $4.00/gal, people will panic again. Then when it drops down to $3.50, people will be happy once more. And then when gas reaches $4.50/gal......

Yes, I translated euros into dollars. The price of gasoline here today is abot €1.50 per liter which is about $7 per gallon.

Yes, certainly, but still we have experienced a 50% hike in the last months. If this continues on much longer, it will stop all growth in the economy after these years of darkness and recession. Over here there are a lot of debates regarding the possibility to return to nuclear energy, which is only economically feasible if the barrel of crude oil costs $60 or more. So I think experts don´t expect gasoline prices decrease in the next months. I think we are going to see a lot of nuclear facilities built around the world within the next years. That would decrease as well the dependency of this unreliable oil producers in the Middle East. But the damage to the nature could be irreversible within the next 100,000 years or so.

Hope it goes six bucks a gallon here in the U.S.!
Why for gosh sakes you may ask?
Simple, other than to inflate their egos who really needs those big Chevy "Subdivisions"?
Oh, I know the pressure of trying to project a particular image is paramount to many, but I hope it breaks them financially trying to uphold that image.
Why am I this way, you may ask? Simple again: other than the ego coupled with the peter principle, those huge SUV drivers are squandering resources for generations, without a care in the world for their children's children; essentially they must be maggots.
I'm in favor of a progressive tax, what you drive determines what you pay at the pump...compact cars 3 bucks a gallon, hybrids 2.25
SUV's 6.00 and UP! Ok, you get off if you can prove it goes along with the job, however those empty boxes in the back better have some weight to them and a current shipping manifest , if not that sucker hits the impound yard faster than a vehicle carrying three keys of black tar heroine!

Heres a classic example, A clown at work who is unskilled drives a Chevy Surburban; now this guy makes about 11.00 bucks an hour, has an apartment and a child to take care of...single parent, however this Surburban is chewing his butt for 200 a month in fuel costs! Nevertheless he's going in style, those big ol' rims that spin too! Money that could be better spent elsewhere (((CHILD)))))

Yea, what we need is a serious wake up call in america, no other country squanders the way we do, maybe what we need is for 40 million of those twinky eating, SUV driving, overweight americans to hit the pavement on bicycles every morning like the Chinese do! The only ones I pity in all of these rising gas prices is those who actually tried to be conservative in their life with fuel consumption and are now force to help susbsidize extravagant behavior, other than that the rest can go to hell at sunset.

Freedom: It's not just for breakfast anymore!

    Gavin,

While I happen to agree with you that most people who drive Escalades, Hummers, and the like are wasting resources, I'm not as enthusiastic as you are about draconian measures to bend them to my will. The wider the door is for you to do that to them, the wider it is for people with a different opinion about something than yours to impose their will on you.

Besides, it's not like people who drive those things haven't noticed that they're paying a lot more than they were a few years ago. The higher prices alone will sort this out. I don't know about your area, but I'm seeing a lot more hybrids on the road these days.

buckwheat3, I agree 100% with you. The US should tax much more gasoline to prevent the use and the abuse of fuel. But, don´t you worry. The system will take care of that and as the demand keeps on growing, so will the prices. Imagine when your Chinese and Indian counterparts start enjoying the Western lifestyle, and beging to purchase big SUV to go to work, huge HVAC systems at home, heaters, fat fridges, plasma Tv´s etc .... The only posible solution is expensive fuel. Where I live many, many people go to work by bicycle. Yeah, we also like confortable vehicles, but $7 a gallon is a quite strong deterrent.... ;)

    Hummer

The Hummer is made right here in South Bend, Indiana. The gas prices have forced them to discontinue the production of the H1. A huge lay-off may result if they cannot transfer the work-force over to the military branch of the business.

Gas is only going to go higher (albeit with bumps here and there). The question should be more along the lines of...when are you going to change your behaviour to compensate for the change that it will cause to your 'way of life'?
Some believe that the world 'oil peak' has already passed, others say it is peaking now. Whichever camp you belong in, really doesn't matter since the result of both are a decreasing world oil/gas supply during continued demand that is not seen as decreasing.

Well, I must say eckert16, I agree with you as well. People do need to change their behaviour. I am sorry, but people here in the U.S. think they can continue to buy gigantic vehicles, even when they don't need them. I am a world traveler and know what you are talking about.

Having said that, the U.S., under the current "incompetent Administration" needs to start exploring alternative fuels. All we have currently is a President who say "We are addicted to oil", but then allows the "Huge" subsidizes of oil company that are making ridiculous profits. Evidence of this? One of the U.S. oil companies CEO's retired at 400million a year! Ah, corporate welfare at it finest.

    Take care,

    Abner
