    Hello louisnguyen27,

As you are studying PhD course in UNISA, does it need any residency in South Africa, or pure 100% DL Doctoral course?

I cannot find any information about residency requirement from UNISA website. I had asked UNISA on this matter via email, but they reply nothing!

    Thanks a lot

UNISA is well known for almost never requiring visits to South Africa. They are also known for responding better to telephone calls than email. Perhaps you should try calling the faculty there that interests you?

    Good luck,

As I know, UNISA requires PhD candidates to visit its campus for oral defense or upon request from the supervisor of the faculty. Therefore, you can complete the study at your own country but expect to visit the university regularly.

Visiting the university of south africa regularly will increase the cost of studies.

Nevertheless, kcfile's information is very useful.

    Man,
Sorry for my late reply, I have just come back from a business trip.
For UNISA, you do not need any residency, and it is 100% DL. But you may face with the problem of SAQA, http://www.saqa.org.za/ because their processes are sometimes slow.
Some supervisors may require you to come to the campus in some very special circumstances:
    1. You can not be recognized by SAQA. Therefore you need to persuade the supervisors.
    2. Some of your subjects relate to African Studies.
    3. You need to join in some works in the laboratory.
I think Steve recommedations are correct. If you want to study business, go ahead, you do not have to come regularly.

I visited DETC web-site and found the following:

    University of South Africa (UNISA)
    P.O. Box 392, Unisa 0003
    South Africa
    Phone: +27-12-429-3111
    Fax: +27-12-429-2323
    E-mail: [email protected]
    Web Site: http://www.unisa.ac.za
    Founded: 1873
    First Accredited: 2002
    Next Review: 2007

Merged with the Technikon Southern Africa and incorporated the distance education campus of Vista University on January 1, 2004 (2002/2006). Offers certificate, diploma and degree programs at undergraduate and graduate level in the fields of Management Sciences; Accounting Sciences; Applied Accounting; Economic Sciences; Computing; Science; Engineering; Law; Criminal Justice; Arts, Culture and Social Sciences; Applied Social Sciences; Education; Language and Literature; Theology and Biblical Studies; Agriculture; Environmental, Life Sciences and Indigenous Knowledge Studies and Natural Resources. (Note: DETC’s accreditation is for courses/programs through the first-professional degree level only.)

So, is that mean that only bachelor degree from UNISA is accredited by DTEC and CHEA. So, the PHD from UNISA is not recognized in USA?

UNISA would be considered accredited by South Africa according to GAAP (Generally Accepted Accreditation Practices). The DETC accreditation was an interesting move on the part of UNISA. It was not really necessary but perhaps improved their chances at getting students from the USA.
