Considering that the ODA site states:-

"ODA does not evaluate the quality of an institution unless the institution applies for Oregon authorization."

In which case what authority had ODA to refer to MIGS unless MIGS had applied for authorization ?

Perhaps ODA should explain who approves publishing recognition information on a state (public) facility when it has not been applied for by the institution concerned.

This has all the appearance of a setup.

Rich, Thanks for attempting to provide substantive information re: MIGS credibility. I still have some questions regarding the points you made: point 1 - the government has included MIGS in its approval of CEU; question: is this on the ANUIES site? What is your source?
Point 2 - the International Handbook of Universities included MIGS in its new listing of CEU- what's the publication date on the handbook you're refering to?
Point 3 - the MIGS board of directors has several CEU officials sitting on it; what is the posture of those CEU officials regarding the marketing of MIGS and 'free research papers' via the NMSI.com site?

I have an interest in MIGS as one of the 'less than 2 dozen students' and I am trying to determine the institutions bonafides using 'primary sources,' if possible.

Please feel free to email me directly with this info.

Point 1: I verified the existence and legitimacy of the CEU with the Mexican Embassay and also with ANUIES. I verified the inclusion of MIGS into CEU's approval with the Rector of the CEU, the president of MIGS, and UNESCO. I did not speak directly with government educational officials about this arrangement, however.

Point 2: The December 2000 version. I received an advanced copy of the listing directly from a UNESCO representative (which I requested), along with the assurance that CEU (including MIGS) would be so listed.

Point 3: I have no idea.

Keep in mind that the CEU officials sitting on the Board are "Honorary" members... and, according to the MIGS president, the only people that actually participate on the board are Sheila, her husband Bill, her attorney Josh Bennett, and Enrique Serna (whose stellar performances have elsewhere been documented.)

That said, I suspect that CEU knows *nothing* of Sheila's sleazy marketing tactics, the "Term Papers for Sale" program, the NSMI website, the links to "doorknob.com" or "tequila.com" that were on the MIGS website for some time, or any of the other unsavory things that Sheila is associated with.

It would be a wonderful thing for someone to prepare a wonderful, carefully packaged assortment of Danzig/NSMI marketing goodies, including the Postal Service action against her, the term paper library site, and various other things that have come to have association with MIGS through Sheila's anti-Midas touch.

I also hope, for both Steve's sake and for posterity, that someone has preserved some of the more ridiculous marketing gaffes (such as the term paper writing service banner on the same page as the MIGS site) so that they can some day be displayed along with some of the other unfortunate marketing attempts by other less-than-wonderful programs.

Even if no one saved the more memorable aspects of MIGS' website (free term papers, etc.), enough of us have seen it in the past to provide a lengthy list of credible witnesses if the need arises.

I hope so as well. I just noticed that http://www.nsmi.com is mostly gone now!!!! The scam about sending $199 for the marketing tips, gone. The computer with money falling out of it, gone. The claim to making $20,000,000 in 8 years, gone. What could have possibly come over the Queen of the Internet that made her take down such a super powerful cash cow?????? Boy I wonder if those hilarious video and audio clips are gone also? [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

Indeed I have. When the lawsuit was first served, I went to the MIGS site, the CEU sites, and several of Sheila's sites and made hard copies of the whole ball of wax.

I must admit that I could not imagine the changes we would begin to see in those sites, ranging from the subtle changes on the MIGS site (especially in terms of the faculty list) to the more extensive, um, clean-up of Sheila's sites. [IMG]

Granted, I've been having fun with this suit since Day 1. But nothing I have said or done could even begin to equal what MIGS - and Sheila - have done to dig their own holes. Here I am, kicking back and putting my feet up, while they do all of my work for me. Ya gotta lova it.

And, as usual, res ipsa loquitor.

Just in case someone reads this thread and thinks that Neil was correct in his statement above, the ODA page at this date specifically says that the State of Oregon still has yet to determine if MIGS is a legitimate higher education institution (and it's easy to see why they would say that).

Just in case anyone is interested, there is a great interview of Alan Contreras of the Office of Degree Authorization by the Chronicle of Higher Educaiton at http://chronicle.com/colloquylive/2001/03/unaccredited that includes this topic.

"Less-than-wonderful" should be reserved for just that - a school which is merely less than wonderful, not a blatant degree mill. Even though I've called CCHS a degree mill repeatedly, they really only have a good deal of "millishness" about them due to their fraudulent business practices, and are obviously not a complete and total mill. Therefore, I personally will refer to CCHS as "less than wonderful" from now on, because that is what the school deserves. (Once again, that label can not be applied to every CCHS or Harcourt employee - really only a small minority. But since that small minority is making the executive decisions to defraud consumers...)

And since Rich was man enough to agree with my last post regarding MIGS, I believe I should in turn agree with him concerning degree mill status for MIGS. Regardless of the millishness of MIGS, they apparently have yet to issue a degree, making "mill" a somewhat premature moniker. "Less than wonderful" can't be argued for the MIGS situation, though.

Wow! Talk about dredging up old posts to "clarify". Be that as it may, I said "rarely", you said "on occasion".

    Beyond splitting hairs.

Hey, good one, Tom! Boy, you really got me there.

Glad to see you're using your time as a DegreeInfo.com administrator wisely while the Prince of Normal spams the shit out of your forum.
