    Hello All,

First of all, I am pretty sure there are no regionally or internationally accredited Masters or Doctoral programs in Hypnotherapy. That said (and I know the following is a dangerous question to ask on this board), do any of you recommend an unaccredited university which offers Masters or Doctorates in Hypnotherapy? I do not want a mail-order or diploma mill degree, but I do not fall into the category of people who believe all unaccredited schools are worthless or fraudulent. Of course, my purpose in obtaining such a degree is strictly educational - I do not expect to obtain licensure from it. Thank you for your future suggestions and comments.

    Peace,
    Daniel

~note: my interest in hypnosis is only as it relates to guided imagery and focused meditation and not the professional practice of hypnotherapy. ~

Consider, as you make your decision, that some states now regulate hypnotherapists and those that don't may in the future. It could be advisable (if you're considering this as a career move and not self-enrichment), to seek a credential recognized for private practice counselors in your state.

As I understand the present situation, there are no accredited degree programs in hypnosis/hypnotherapy and there is only one accredited (it's DETC and ACCET) program at all (see my sig below).

There appears to be an ego battle of sorts amongst the providers of hypnotherapy training. Some argue that this isn't something that should/can be taught by DL others are arguing that Dr. Xs method is inferior to Dr. Ys method. There seems to me to be no uniform agreement on how things can and should be done in the world of hypnosis DL -- but then, I'm just an outside observer. You should watch out for examples of this as you do your search. Comments such as "our program is the only good program in the world, everyone else sucks..." seems to be a recurring theme.

I find it interesting that hypnosis, hypnotherapist, and hypnotist aren't in the USDoE Occupational Outlook Handbook.

    Carson,

Thanks for the information. I just requested the course materials for the free Introduction to Hypnotherapy course, and it looks very interesting! How is your progress in the course? Would you recommend it to others?

"How is your progress in the course? Would you recommend it to others? "

I've only completed the first lesson in that program. I spent the week "practicing" what I learned and have found it to work surprisingly well. :D

I'm looking forward to the remaining lessons and what I may be able to do in direct application of this technique. I'm about to find out if this works in reducing soloist stage nervousness among music students. I'm also planning to see how I like the results when applied to voice and diction coaching. It clearly works at making people not able to bend their arm unless I tell them too. (which was the example in the lesson)

You can't beat the price if you're interested in the subject matter...

    Good luck.
The info above seems pretty comprehensive. not knowing about the topic, it does sound like NLP methodology applied in differing situations. Maybe it is related.

There's are a variety of ways to get your Ph.D. with Hypnosis emphasis:

    1. Go to a school that lets you design your specialization, such as Union Institute and University. Some have. I know a gal that got her degree in psychology there and did a specialization in Ericsonian Hypnosis and NLP.

    2. Go to a school like Saybrook Institute and write your dissertation on your hypnosis application. Saybrook is very "alternative". Then you can say that your research was with a specialty in hypnosis applications, etc.

    Hi Coach,

Not being able to bend one's arm might come in handy when treating those with substance abuse problems.

Seriously, thanks for the information, I just signed up for the free training. It will be interesting to see what it entails.
