No DSST Testing Centers In My Area

I am a new member to this site, so forgive me if this question has been addressed in the past.

I would like to take a few DANTES (DSST) tests in order to save on the overall cost of finishing my bachelor's degree. However, I have checked the list of participating colleges and universities at the DSST Web site http://www.getcollegecredit.com that are supposed to offer the exams, but there are no schools within an hour of my home. Even the few that are about an hour-and-a-half away do not allow non-matriculated students to take the DSST exam there.

I tried a google search on the matter, and read that someone was able to get a DSST test proctored at their local community college library because there were no available testing centers in their area. However, when I called the phone number listed on the getcollegecredit Web site, the representative was not very much help and said that she had not heard of anyone taking a DSST test that way.

I went to their contact page http://www.getcollegecredit.com/04learners_g.html to try emailing someone else there about it and quickly found out that the email address they have listed is not valid. I also tried filling out the email form on that page, and it is not a valid emailing vehicle either. It strikes me as a bit unprofessional.

I have looked all over trying to find a valid email address for getcollegecredit.com, but have yet to find one.

Has anyone else found that there were no DSST testing locations in their area? If so, how did you get around that problem?

I have had no problem getting my CLEPs done, but for some reason, these DSST exams are eluding me.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

    Hi Learnaswego,

    Welcome to the board.

    Where are you located?

Where did you take your CLEPs? Have you asked them if they are interested in offering DSST? DSSTs are even easier to administer because they are paper based.

    Welcome to the forum!

    Thank you, Brandon and beholdweb.

Actually, I took the CLEPs at a college located about 45 minutes away from my home. I asked them if they administered the DANTES/DSST exams, and they said that they only gave those to their matriculated students. They had no suggestions for alternative testing locations, either.

So one option would be to apply for admissions. It sounds like you would not have to even take a class but just be admitted.

It's making it harder to help not knowing where you live...

DSST privileges might just be the tip of the iceberg. There are often many advantages to establishing a nominal presence at a local school: use of libraries, computers, gym, health facilities, student discounts, etc.

Of course I don't know if 45 minutes away counts as "local" or whether the fees would make it worthwhile, or how much is available to non-matriculated students. I live near a comprehensive urban state university, and it seems to me that everyone in the community would do well to sign up.

My degree was strictly DL, but if I were going after it now, I'd consider a two-pronged approach, perhaps applying CLEP and DSST credits to the local transcript to keep in good standing or fulfil prerequisites for the occasional night course and taking advantage of the myriad facilities to move the DL component along.
