Does anyone have any information about the legitimacy of the UNIVERSITY for PROFESSIONAL STUDIES - http://www.ufps.edu/ - to satisfy my personal curiosity? I know they are licensed in Alabama, and that it is briefly mentioned in Dr. Bear’s Guide, but I have not been able to find any further information.

    Thanks!

What further information do you seek? Their website is very revealing.

Operates from California, but licensed in Alabama. Alabama licensure is meaningless.

    Doesn't offer courses.

Awards copious amounts of life experience credit, even at the doctoral level.

Requires students to get their remaining credits elsewhere.

Lists a bunch of "accreditation alliances," but doesn't indicate how they're "allied" to them. They're certainly not accredited, but seem to want to leave that impression. Dishonest.

Claims accreditation from something called the "American Association of Schools," an unrecognized agency that, in turn, claims to accredited many already-accredited schools. Gee, I wonder if those schools know about this additional "bonus" accreditation? I'm guessing "no."

Accepts credit card payment through PayPal? C'mon.

No faculty listed. No course descriptions. On and on and on.

Again, what information do you need that you do not already have?

From the description in Bears' Guide, it would seem to be a diploma mill to me.

    Here's what they say:
    We are also told
UFPS is "accredited" by the "American Association of Schools: A National Accrediting Association Since 1990" which is NOT a CHEA-recognized national accreditor.

UFPS is expensive for the kind of thing it is: a PhD costs $9,270.

So is the "accreditor" independent of the "university?" Look at the domain registrations:

For those who state that what matters is whether or not a school is operating with state licensure and/or approval, I would hold up this shining example of why that notion is crap. And we all know where "crap central" on that issue is.

This isn't an alternative school. It is a diploma mill pretending to be legitimate by lying about its "accreditation," filling up its pages with drivel, and providing every excuse it can think of to people wishing to delude themselves, all while operating legally in California via its Alabama licensure.

Can a state-licensed/approved school be legitimate? Sure. But examples like these show why this standard isn't sufficient on its own.

If you bought a package of hot dogs, opened it, and found several were spoiled, you wouldn't eat any of the others, and you might decide never to buy that brand again. Diploma mills like this bring a stench to all alternative higher education programs, which in a few cases is unfortunate.

Their diatribe on how accreditation supposedly stymies innovation ought to be a big clue; call it "sour grapes."

    Brazen Duckmen!
The problem is that none of the Brazen Duckmen can produce any credible innovations that their lack of accreditation has enabled them to make.

Innovations are certainly possible, but there would have to be some convincing evidence of them beyond a Duckman's marketing claims.

If lack of accreditation allowed a university to produce better research, if it helped a university strengthen its recognition by the scholastic and professional worlds, then I'd listen up.

But all we ever see are complaints about the evil repressive system and grandiose claims of academic prowess that nobody else can see.

    neologisms galore

Who knows? But I like the way it sounds.

A possible etymology: "If it quacks like a duck, swims like a duck, [omitted scatological reference], etc. etc." is sometimes shortened to "it smells like a duck" in Degreeinfo SpeedSpeak to describe a potential diploma mill. Thus the purveyors of bogus degrees could be "Duckmen."

Certainly claiming to be in the process of building a brand-new 60-campus university system (and doing this while cavorting with people who accessorize with curtain rods) is brazen, perhaps even flamboyant.

    Agreed, UJ!

"University of Professional Studies" is located in Duckmenistan, where .............

Slimy, dishonest, greedy, and un-wonderful "diploma-millish" daffy ducks and shills have delusions of academic grandeur, pretending to be scholarly peacocks, research eagles, publication falcons, policy-generating ravens and honors-amassing carrions ........

BUT these residents of Duckmenistan (and its many slimytowns) are known to bob, weave, and duck quality entreaties like ducks; they doodle like ducks, quack like ducks, and mess up the lake shores like ducks .......... therefore they are

    either:

    - mills! or
    - sub-standard and un-wonderful operations masquerading as DL colleges!

Either way, they produce much of the stuff on paper that have a tendency to hit the fan to spread ill cheer and lies galore, contaminating whoever gets within nose-shot.

    Brazen Duckmen!

    tangled fingers

We have all seen goats and bags. But I have never seen an ooat, to the best of my knowledge. It was excitement about the phrase "Brazen Duckmen" that did it-- I mistyped "goatbag," alas.

I think that a number of people missed the last line of your post which was the most delightful line of a most delightful post.

P.S. I think that I might like ooatbag even more than goatbag.
