I just started taking classes at pierce college (community college in washington state) and I am trying to get the hand of self based online learning instead of the structured version that I have done before. I am just about to complete my second class accounting 1 but it looks like I am going to get a C in the class. I have also got a C in chemistry. I was just curious if 4-year universities will accept C's and accept the transfer credit??

Every school is different in regards to this policy. My guess is that in general the answer is "yes." However, this may not be a universal standard. Online is a different. Easier for some, harder for others. It's been harder for me.
    Hang in.

I couldn't imagine you having a problem. Typical cutoff is C or above. Below C is a no-go. You really should have no problem at all.

At least that is my experience with Texas universities, both Public and Private at the undergraduate level. Different story with Graduate grades.

To which university do you want to transfer?

Not only will four year schools ACCEPT the credit, you have NO CHOICE but to provide them with an official transcript of your community college work and they will likely NOT PERMIT you to repeat the classes.

But really, although a "C" is not a derogatory mark, if you are getting more than one "C" in community college, there may be a problem with your study habits. PLEASE understand that I do not say this to embarrass you! But community colleges are well equipped to assist students to acquire better study skills. You would do well, maybe, to ask.

Whatever you do, DON'T GIVE UP!

Well.... I have a hard time in science but being in the military my only real choice is to do online classes. And now that I am a Military Working Dog handler I deploy or go on missions without a lot of notice a lot. So self based classes work good for me. But I needed a science class... maybe I should of done something other then chemistry. I just wanted to check it out to see if I liked it. After taking it.. I have to say it is a tough class for distand learning. For the other class... accounting.. I messed up at the beginning of the class... but now I think I am getting on the right track. I just don't know if I can make up for my past grades enough to pull out the B.

Accounting and Chemistry are two of the most difficult classes, regardless of the calibre of college attended. I was a biology major for the first few years of undergrad. Raked in a C in Chem 2 and Differential Equations. But then A's in Organic Chem and the multitude of Biology classes. Still ended up graduating cum laude. Went to grad school (Jesuit, B&M) and graduated with only one B in the entire program.

Point being, I wouldn't get brain damage at all with a couple/three C's. It's called teething, especially at the undergrad level. Once you jump over to your 4 year program school, you'll be good to go.

Good Luck from a fellow LEO!

You can do it, provided you are not in a line unit. I know several people in staff positions who took classes while deployed to Iraq.

My advice, however, is that before signing up for a class you seek out one of your officers. They have all been to college and may be able to advise you on whether a particular class's material is too much for you to chew on in an online format.

Also, most officers I've known would happy to help an enlisted troop with informal tutoring, provided you're making a concerted effort to learn the material (presuming they have time, of course).

Yes - and thank god for it! Even though I am pretty much a master in electronics, I rarely got over a C in an electronics class. It always took me just a little longer than a quarter to pick up on the concepts. -- unfortunatley, I didn't test well.

Good luck - chemistry isn't that easy -

Believe it or not, some Universities will even accept a D or two. I am not advocating that people try for D, just a comment.

Take care and don't sweat it. Those are hard subjects.

I've finished 16 credits through LSU (www.is.lsu.edu) since I've been in Iraq. It's easy to do, you just need to make the time. And without the distractions of family and alcohol, it's suprisingly easy to do over here. :D

Vice talking to your officers (many of whom are graduates of B&M schools), I would seek out a "mustang" officer (former enlisted) or one of your senior enlisted leaders that has experience with distance learning. If you ask around, you'd be suprised just how many of them are also taking classes.
