Devry University?

I may start work at an employer that offers tuition assistance to Devry online and local campus courses. The tuition assistance would make it an offordable option I never considered before.

What is the opinion on the school?

I have seen quite a few posts from DeVry graduates who complained about the high prices and the difficulty in transferring credits. I haven't seen too many satisfied DeVry customers.

I made a big mistake and told my wife to go to DeVry over University of Phoneix. While DeVry is an excellent technical college at its campus in Phoenix, its campus in Fremont is pretty much a joke. DeVry tries to come across as a State College - even charging to park in a office parking lot (why?) - everything is pretty much nickel and dime - and everything and everything is an add-on from the initial price they charge you.

For my money if you are thinking of DeVry, go to UoP. They have similar reputations and in the end, my BSIT was much cheaper than my wives BSTM.

    Re: Re: Devry University?

I searched for Devry in this board and I could not find a thread specifically about Devry one way or another.
Most of the search results were people adding a link to Devry or a comment about Devry to a post about something else.
I have seen many complaints about UOP and their annoying study groups, so I didn't see it as a better choice.

By the way, it is traditional to post a weblink if the threadstarter is asking about a specific university.

Devry recently set up a branch campus in San Antonio, with the requisite media blitz and standard "Employers know the trusted name" campaign.

When a co-worker went for an enrollment appointment, the first thing they shoved in his face was an application for a Devry branded credit card, and a user agreement that stated that he would use the card for all textbook purchases and tuition costs over and above employer (in this case military) tuition assistance.

When he abruptly ended the appointment and said "Not interested", they literally followed him out of the building wanting to know if he would reconsider if they waived the requirement, advanced him the amount, etc.

He eventually went with AMU's history program (knowing full well they were DETC, but impressed with the school and lack of arm - twisting).

Since I am not referring to their masters program, here is the link to Devry's undregraduate site.

Well, I didn't say they were in DeVry-specific threads, but there were posts which specifically mentioned DeVry. Out of the half dozen or so posts about DeVry, as well as ITT Technical Institute, a different but similar program, I don't recall any of them being particularly complimentary toward the programs. I don't have any personal experience with the programs, but read enough to know I would not consider them myself.

You can read more about DeVry from some of its alumni here: http://www.ripoffreport.com/results.asp?q1=ALL&q4=&q6=&q3=&q2=&q7=&searchtype=0&submit2=Search%21&q5=DeVry&Search=Search

On the other hand, I have heard better things about DeVry's Keller School of Management, which offeres graduate programs.

Bottom line: I would look elsewhere.

I think that Devry is every bit as good as University of Phoenix and actually quite similar in many ways.

If the discount is enough, it seems a reasonable choice. One of the major complaints seems to be cost. Since it appears your tuition assistance handles that, it's certainly talking to them further.

I do have to clarify an earlier post of mine. I had mentioned that some of the alumni complained about transfer of credits. I was actually thinking of ITT Technical Institute, which is nationally-accredited. DeVry is regionally-accredited, but operates a little too much like University of Phoenix for some people's tastes. Of course, that's a whole other thread.

Does DeVry have the same study group projects that everyone hates at UOP?

As large as Devry is, I don't remember having anyone around here who has actually attended it. You probably would do better by calling its admissions office.

Maybe tomorrow a current or former student will post.
I'd rather not call to speak with the admissions salespeople until I hear from actual students.

Having taught at DeVry in the Chicago metro area - I have a hard time taking DeVry grads seriously.

The two campuses nickle and dime you for everything. As long as the student's check continues to clear - they are going to be allowed to continue.

True story: A CIS senior contacted me re: showing him how connect two or more PC's together. This is something I expect from a CIS freshman or perhaps a slow sophomore - certainly not someone getting ready to graduate.

Yes - my wife is doing her senior project right now with a study group where she is nearly double the average age. Most of these students don't have a clue. She is doing about 80% of the work herself including the programming portion which is driving me nuts (she comes to bed at 2 am!)

She was in groups in about 3/4ths of her class. At UoP, our group was the same throughout the program. At DeVry, they change every class.

There are better choices than DeVry - and there are enough experts on the board to push to you them!

This is a good move. When I was considering a move to IT, I talked with DeVry/Keller and ITT and a few others that were incredibly hard sell and incredibly hard to get rid of.

I don't know about the quality of their programs, but they do seem to be running a close second to UOP in the advertising department. I've received several spam emails from them in recent weeks. With that in mind, I find the business practices described in some of the posts here unsurprising.

Ok, I attended DeVry from 1984-86 and graduated with an AS Diploma. At the time DeVry did not offer an AS degree.

Cost: Outrageously expensive. I attended the Columbus B&M School.

Pros: Business leaders do recognize DeVry grads as having a good education. Every single one of my credits transfered to Excesior with no problems once I got the right two folks from the two institutions talking. I have used my DeVry education to edge-out other competition within the interview process.

Cons: For the cost of DeVry you could attend an Ivy League school. My biggest complaint with DeVry is that they are very pushy when it comes to potential students.

I never had any issues with credit cards, parking charges or any other of the above mentioned issues.

    Hope this helps

    Merry Christmas All

I would contact Devry's alumni association and see if you can get specific names and the contact information of alumni. Talking to an admissions person is not going to get you anything but positives, not really objective answers to questions.

Trust me, we (admissions officers at for profit institutions) are trained on hard sell tactics, but not all of us use them :) I use a much more personal approach and have immersed myself in the programs at Strayer. I enrolled in graduate school next quarter and have read the academic advising, procedural and faculty manuals cover to cover several times. I would hate to feel rushed into a life altering situation myself, so I just put myself in the potential student's shoes and talk to them like a person, not a number.
