FedEx rings my doorbell while I'm completing my finals for a course at Southwestern and it's my Ashworth College diploma....the life of a distance ed student.

As an FYI...it kinda looks like something I can print at home...but I'll hang it up anyhow.;)

    Hey, friendorfoe, CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger, friend - I got my Associates from my local Community College after 36 years by completing a long-postponed speech course (online!) and testing out of a pesky Phys. Ed. class with DANTES Here's to Your Health. (I was NOT going to go back and do that!)

It was all such a whirl of test-taking, chasing professors down for sign-offs, Petitions for Credit, computer competencies exam, etc. (I was their first student to get DANTES credit and 4th to take their in-house computer science credit exam, etc.).

After doing all that, I went to the registrar's office to see if I'd really, truly, FINALLY graduated out of that two year college at the age of 53? The girl looked at me and said "Yes, I have all your graduation requirements, your diploma will be ready in January to pick up, or you can come to graduation ceremonies in May." I told her I'd come and get it as soon as it was printed.

In a few weeks, I went back to the registrar's office. The staffer handed me a manila envelop with the diploma in it (nicely bound, at least) then without pause, said to the person behind me in line "May I help you?" Talk about an anti-climax. :)

Gotta love DL learning! I think you are doing great.

Hmm. That's certainly disappointing. After your spending three-thousand-something dollars taking pre-packaged courses on CD-ROM and/or online (and, by so doing, not using-up any instructor/professor time); and after probably only costing Ashworth a tiny handful of dollars in support personnel time over the entire course of your associates degree, you'd think they could part with a lousy $10 to $30 to spring for high-quality parchment and professional printing for each graduate's diploma.

I always cringe whenever I hear this sort of thing. I think it's unconscionable when institutions of higher learning skimp on that part of things. There's just no excuse for it.

Anyway... let that not detract from what it means for you to have gotten it. Congratulations!!

"...it kinda looks like something I can print at home..."

The last (real) Oxford diploma I saw on someone's wall had the person's name typed in, for goodness sake. Wonder if they still do that?

Thanks everybody. I'll hang it up...and make room for my soon to be Southwestern one....:D

Gregg, I agree with what you said about spending a lousy 10-20 bucks on a decent diploma, but then it's not the diploma that makes a degree....just don't tell the mill operators....who incidentally probably have the most decorative diplomas in the world.

I celebrated by having a couple of glasses of a non-imported rum from Venezuela....smooth like glass.

I didn't drink so much that I didn't wake up in time to write another paper though. Back to the grind.

    Dr. Bear....now that's chintzy....haha. Made me smile.;)
