While at Yahoo today they had this wonderful banner ad for the infamous Aldmeda University:
Convert your earned experience into a Verifiable University Degree from Almeda University. Accredited by The Association for Online Academic Excellence (AOAEx). The evaluation is free. Jump start your career today.
On the far right in larger text it says"College degree in 8 days".

wouldn't the socially responsible thing to do is not allow these types of adds on your website?

    Yes.

Yet another of the many reasons why I hate Yahoo! and always have... and probably always will. Were that that were the only web site that did such things. No wonder degree-seekers are so often misled.

Only one legitimate school - WGU is listed with the 25+ less than wonderful. Credit for prior work experience.

One may get impression that WGU is sub standard as well, or maybe there is one WGU that is fake and another real?
But they also list some good info mixed with bad.
its like USA today paper long time favored by milles for advertising.

It just means that Yahoo! will take advertising from anyone with a checkbook. Nothing more.

No not anymore! Yahoo! has a policy of not accepting advertising for X-rated Material and it has been in effect for several years(I only know this because I am an internet junkie, Honest).

In the early days the took it from everyone!

Now they just about take it from everyone.

In any case I say they should do the responsible thing and turn down advertisments from degree mills because it is the right thing to do! They really don't need the money from them anyway.

    Almeda - don't laugh

Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (www.mwdh2o.com, largest water wholesaler in the world, and operator of the Colorado River Aqueduct) recently promoted an employee (Peter Wiseman) to a management position based on an Almeda degree in Civil Engineering. The degree was a minimum qualification. The promotion was contested to the "Ethics Intake Committee", which consists of Gilbert Ivey, representing the CEO office, Gerald Riss, Auditor, and Henry Barbosa, representing General Counsel. You can see their bizarre conclusions in an October Ethics report to the MWD Board of Directors (see www.mwdh2o.com, Ethics, reports). The report accepted the Association for Online Academic Excellence as proper accreditation.

    I'm not making this up.

Almeda has a right to exist and trade.

Yes they have a right to exist and trade, but what they offer is completely fraudulent and useless to their customers; and can even get you fined/arrested in some states.

No legitimate academic institution would ever accept a degree from there, nor would any employer who even has a small amount of knowledge of how the US accreditation system works

Which I would argue means that they have no right to exist and trade... else, why would there be laws against what they do.

No, it doesn't. It's a diploma mill... which, by definition, defrauds people. Fraud is a crime. No entity that commits crimes has a right to exist in any society which places a high value on lawfulness and accountability.

And, just a friendly reminder, intsvc: We routinely ban those who promote diploma mills around here... I mean... you've noticed that, right?

Tread lightly; and don't expect to be warned again... at least not merely warned.

    Lousy service

Eight days? EIGHT days?? What TAKES them so long? I mean, if they use PayPal, they don't even have to wait for the check to clear!

    The outting of a troll

Thankfully Gregg and AIC had a chance to respond, to this erroneous claim.

My question to you intsvc is this, why must you keep poking that head out from under the bridge?

Yes Virginia, Intsvc is a troll!

No I am not being nasty but since Chip fixed the search function it's amazing what you can find take a look:

Some years ago there was a bit of a debate (I'm sure that in some circles it was a huge debate) regarding smallpox. It seems that we (humans) had successfully eliminated smallpox. There were no known cases on the planet. None. Zero. Zilch. Nada. Nunca. I'm talking about the big goose egg.

BUT. There were a couple of places that still had some frozen stuff. You know, those vials sitting in the liquid nitrogen.

Do we get rid of the samples?

There were some that said yes and some that said no. The arguments fell along fairly predictable lines. One philosophical argument (ugghh, shudder) was that it was a living organism and as such didn't it have the right to live? Of course, the easy response is, "From where does this right originate?"

I would ask that question of our fellow member intsvc,

If this mill has "the right" to exist, from where does this right originate?

Translated I believe means the apprentice(I am not fluent in spanish, but it is close to Portguese).

I am assuming you are talking about me and so I shall resonpd as such!

I think that it is coy to respond in a second langue that in which we have no confidence to respond to in english!

Perhaps I should start responding in Portugese. ahh..but I try and make myself easly understood by every one!

Second I have never advocated using a degree mill and agreed with Gregg and AIC !

I beleive all my posts stand very well on their own..I have always posted against the use of degree milla and will continue to do so if that makes me a troll then so be it,but it is you who I think perhaps lost what a troll means in translation!

I promise you it is not you I am talking about. Rest assured of that. You got the translation right but you have to look beyond the obvious. By the way, could you please explain me the connection between "the apprentice" and you. I just don't get it.

Go ahead, I understand Portuguese just fine. Also Italian.

Very true. You are a honest contributor to this board and I have and hopefully continue to enjoy your posts for a long time to come.

By the way, I love your signature.

By turning the thread direction from Almeda to me, your're commiting ad hominem .

An "Ad Hominem" is a general category of fallacies in which a claim or argument is rejected on the basis of some irrelevant fact about the author of or the person presenting the claim or argument.

Nothing to do with Tim's post. I guess those Life Experience Degrees really paid off.
