Heriot-Watt (EBS) MBA courses materials

Unfortunately, this is the first time since 2003 I have to ask a question. The search tool of this site was very powerful and all my questions were answered by searching the forums. Sadly, this is no longer possible.

Anyway, Does any know where I can buy the Heriot-Watt MBA courses materials? I am only interested in the courses materials. At this moment I am not planning to do the MBA. So I really don't want to pay $1400 pre course for the course material only.

If anyone has those courses materials and he or she is welling to sell it, I am welling to buy it

Heriot-Watt hasn't been much mentioned here since Professor Kennedy retired.

Although offtopic, it is possible to use the URL returned by Google to create a valid link for the forums.

Using a semi-random (off-topic) thread as an example, suppose Google returned the following URL:
www.degreeinfo.com/static/forum_archive/1/15789/thread_15789_page_1.html

Take the number following thread_ (in this case 15789) and append it to the following URL
http://forums.degreeinfo.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=

In this case it becomes
http://forums.degreeinfo.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=15789

That should work in most (if not all) cases - I have yet to have it fail.

Cool. I thought the error message to mean those pages no longer exist on the server.

 

You can also contact Pearson Publishing, in London, the publisher of the EBS textbooks. If I recall correctly, they do sell the textbooks without the course fees. I believe that the texts sold for just over $ 100 USD.

Must one pay the full $1200 for the course before taking the test, or is the test fee included in this amount? Also, does anyone have a list of the testing centers in the United States that may be used?

I read one of your earlier posts, and i have to say - way to go on accumulating 52 credits since July of this year! That's impressive!

Anyway, I just thought you might be interested to know (if you didn't already), that the Heriott-Watt (EBS) does NOT require that you have a Bachelor's degree to gain entrance to their online MBA program. I understand that this is common knowledge to many people on this forum, but I thought I would throw it out there for you.

BTW, I hear that the HW MBA exams are extremely difficult! Of course, if you have a strong background in Business (or you apply yourself well) then this should not be an issue. I briefly considered pursuing an MBA through HW/EBS, however I decided that I wasn't really all that interested in obtaining an MBA! Business is just not my thing. You have to really LOVE (or at least greatly enjoy) what you decide to study at the Graduate level.

Thanks for the encouraging words! I agree, you really have to love what you are planning to study at the graduate level or you probably won't succeed. I honestly don't think the MBA is for me but I would love to pursue a Management or even a Psychology degree at the Master's level.

The $ 1200 per course is paid at the time of purchasing the course. The test fee is an extra amount paid when you are ready to sit (invigilate, as the British say) for the exam. In terms of the location of the test centers, EBS selects the centers based on the number of people in the area who are sitting for an examination. They generally make every effort to arrange for a center within 250 miles of the student.

My first two exams were taken at a community college in Salem, Oregon. The remaining exams were taken at the University of Washington in Seattle. The test centers are usually the testing center of a college or university. If you live near a large city, the chances are good that one of the universities or colleges there are, or can be, testing centers for EBS.

I graduated from the EBS program in 2000, so please let me know if you have any other questions.

 

Michael, you already graduated from the EBS program. so I don't think you need the courses materials anymore

 

I like to sit, late of an evening, with a glass of fine port and flip through the pages....

 

If it is only the materials you want, there are tons of textbooks out there that cover the same thing. For a list of books that follow the same areas that EBS teaches, check out "The Graham Chronicles" at http://members.aol.com/dgraham380/hwmba.html I used a lot of the same books he did preparing for the EBS exams. Some other texts even have the same authors of the EBS materials.

I am currently running my own business. I don't know a lot about accounting, marketing and many of the business subjects. So I decide to start learning those subjects. And maybe later, I want to do an MBA (DL). EBS is in the top of my list. The idea here is I use their course material to learn the subjects matter. And if I decide later that I want to do an MBA with EBS, I will be familiar with their courses' content and it would require less time to prepare for the exams.

I might be wrong, but this is how I view it.

 

I think I see what you are saying. You want to study the EBS materials, and then maybe later on down the road, review them, then take the exam.

The way the EBS exams are structured, that would be extremely difficult. You really need to know the material cold and take the exams while everything is fresh in your mind. Also, the EBS material is sometimes updated. If you study some older material, you might get exam questions that were not covered in the texts you have.

I still say your best bet would be to follow the books in the Graham Chronicles. I can provide some books to cover subjects that he did not list. Then, when you are ready for the EBS MBA, you will have a good head start.

 

+1 to what Edowave said. Especially the parts about the texts being updated periodically, and the best way to pass the exams is right after studying the texts.

One cannot underestimate the difficulty of the EBS exams. You can get a case study that is worth 30% of your grade that is based on a single topic covered in 2.5 pages out of a 500 page text. The best way to think of the exams is as a really tough open book exam without the open book.

I know how tough the exams are. I liked some of the exams so much, I took them twice!

Accounting
Marketing
Project Management
Consumer Behaviour
Negotiation
Influence

 

Negotiation - "The New Negotiation Edge" by Gavin Kennedy - same author as the EBS text

Influence - "Influencing for Results" also by Gavin Kennedy, also the same author as the EBS text.

Marketing - "Marketing Management" by Harper Boyd. Same author as the EBS text, however it is an older text because he is deceased.

Consumer Behavor - " Understanding the Consumer" by David Statt. Same author as the EBS text and on-campus lecturer.

Accounting - Forget it, hire a CPA. What you do need to know is how to interpret a companies financial statements. - " The Analysis and Use of Financial Statements" by Gerald White

Read those and you will be good to go.
