Wondering what accredited university are they talking about?

    http://www.global-univ.com/feature.htm

Universities offers, by far, the best deal in home-study M.B.A. programs. The university's program has a simple structure, can be easily accessed from anywhere in the world, is the most affordable of the major distance or executive M.B.A.'s, and is offered by a fully accredited, highly reputable British and US university.

Universities is considered the "M.I.T. of Scotland". It is world renowned for its engineering, technical, and business programs. The Esmé Fairbairn Research Centre within the business school has developed an M.B.A. program that can be delivered anywhere in the world - without the need for classrooms, tutorials, residencies, or even a telephone. In 1994, the research center won the Queen's Award for Export Achievement in recognition of the astounding international success of the program. At last count there were more than 14,000 students enrolled worldwide (with over 2,000 students in the United States and Canada combined). This makes it the largest M.B.A. program in the world

    It looks like

    http://www.global-univ.com

    is ripping off

    http://www.degreeofsuccess.com

Degreeofsuccess seems to be selling somebody's DL guidebook.

Global-univ has deleted reference to the book and added some material of their own. They have links (that didn't work) to "Beth University" and "Frederick University", and they are offering "affiliations" as well as "career counseling".

They are describing the Edinburgh Business School of Heriot-Watt University, which has often been called
the MIT of Britain. The site is registered to David Frederick of Thailand. I've asked my friends at Heriot-Watt what's going on.

    Obviously untrue claims

All of these claims are completely untrue, and this can be easily demonstrated in less than five minutes by anyone with access to a web browser.

The Middle States Association does not accredit "Beth University". You can see their list of accredited schools here. Hmm, "Beth University" is not listed.

There is no such institution as "Beth University". Try a Google search. It doesn't exist, except at www.global-univ.com.

The "Beth University" homepage is stolen. The text and graphics were ripped off from the Briarcliffe College homepage.

In summary, "Beth University" is so obviously phony that no reasonable person would take it seriously.

Oregon ODA already knows about them, as per the quote below. Apparently ODA is unwilling or unable to close them down, despite the fact that they are "operating illegally in Oregon". I find this somewhat surprising.

I'm suspicicous of any university named after my ex-wife. How I got a wife named "Frederick" is another story! ;)

Obvious phonies, this operation demonstrates that there is no need to deceive with half-truths. Lies do just as well, and I doubt there is little correlation between how truthful a diploma mill is with how long they avoid prosecution.

As of November 2003, an attorney had just moved into that space. I don't know if he's still there.

    503-298-7696 didn't generate any hits.

503-296-7696 (the fax number) seems to be a residential phone number belonging to a man with a Pakistani sounding name. The address is a Portland apartment house.

I LOVE the phrase, "M.I.T. of Scotland". I was not aware that there was a Massachusetts in Scotland...for one thing, the food in Boston is certainly better...

    MIT of...

A quick Google search suggests that Heriot-Watt is not actually known as the "MIT of Scotland" anywhere, except at global-univ.com.

However, you can get some interesting results by punching the phrase "MIT of [random geographic region]" into Google, e.g. "MIT of Canada", "MIT of the South", "MIT of Mexico", "MIT of England", "MIT of Germany", "MIT of Russia", "MIT of Africa", "MIT of Israel", etc. You will be astonished at the number of regions that have MITs. In fact, some regions have multiple MITs, judging from the competing claims.

MIT, of course, is also known as the "CalTech of the East".
