I was wondering if any of you guys have any feedback regardng the LLM degrees offered at Northumbria U. Thanks, Simon
I haven't heard of this university before, but I found something from a google search: http://www.unofficial-guides.com/guides/northumbri-comments.html
I am presently working toward a LLM in International Commercial Law via DL at Northumbria. I'm not sure what you're looking for specifically, but here is some general feedback that I can give you: - Response to questions is fast and professional. - Books are included, but I have bought some additional books whic h is really helpful. - There appears to be virtually no contact between students. Perhaps this is different if you attend the optional study weeks. I did not. - As you may be aware, assessment is done via a paper for each course. This might sound easy but the level of research expected seems high to me (granted I have no other graduate education with which to compare it). The textbook and study guide will not get you through the paper. - I have received results from 2 courses so far. Grades in one varied between around 30% and 75%, in the other between 25% and 77%. They only tell you the low/high and your mark. - You have online access to a large number of journals which is extremely helpful in researching. - The study guide is extremely basic. I would have liked to see them put a little more detail into them.
A couple more things: - Due dates for the assignments are end of February and End of August (roughly). - The pass mark is 40%. If you get over 60% you get a commendation, over 70% is a distinction. - Regarding online access to journals: There are quite a few, but I can't say that every subject is specifically covered. For instance, I have found the resources a little limited for maritime law. Incidentally, in the last Guardian rankings Northumbria was ranked something like 14th best undergraduate law school in the UK (if memory serves 80+ schools were ranked). So you might even be getting a decent education.
