NASCAR...nope I hate anything going in circles, speaking of making laps, why do we throw away so much money on that space shuttle? For millions of dollars it too goes up and makes laps, heck A dog track would be more exciting!
Oh, I forgot, in the 70's the whole shuttle thing was going to "enrich our lives"...ok almost 30 years later and I'm still waiting on some enrichment! Here's a better way to enrich ol Gav's life send back some of those tax dollars spent on those shabby chinese bottle rockets and I'll show uncle sam how to enrich a life!
Now when we went to the moon that was exciting...but now, nothing but laps, all that money pissed away while children in our country have to battle a disease "solo"....damn sometimes I wonder if every third politican in Washington is a maggot!

I saw this very sentiment posted on this board prior to the Kerry-Bush election and we know how that turned out. I live in a Democratic county without a single Republican office holder at county or state level and there hasn't been one since the 70's. Bush won my county by a lot.

What's wrong with voting Christian?

Christians may not be perfect, but this country was founded on mostly Christian principles.

And as far as "Corporate Interests" are concerned, well I may not always agree with all Corporate concessions, but they also need to be considered, as do individuals.
Especially, were Corporate America gives us most of the better paying jobs in this country; unless there is any body out there who can show me were anyone got a job from a poor man?

 

I don't know how you got into this level of politics in this discussion, but if I may be indulged I would like to answer the initial question.

I would like to live in a deserted island with the swiss bikini team, but please, please, please don't tell my wife.

I'm not sure what the phrase 'voting Christian' is supposed to mean.

If it just means 'listen to your conscience and to your heart', then I have no objection at all. It's good advice. Of course there's nothing particularly Christian about it, because those of us who aren't Christians occasionally have consciences and hearts too.

But if it means something more theocratic and shariah-like, if it means that God's purported revelations need to be made the basis of man's earthly law, then I oppose it pretty strongly.

The problem is that there doesn't seem to be any method to distinguish religious truth from religious falsity, at least none that would be persuasive to individuals outside one's own tradition. When asked to justify why they believe in their particular revelations, believers typically fall back on some variant of "it's my faith!"

I think that democracy works best in a climate of discussion and persuasion. Good ideas need to have the opportunity to win adherents and the flaws in bad ideas need to be exposed.

But in order for consensus to even be possible, the electorate has to be on the same page. The evidence and reasoning that justify political positions has to be of a sort that's potentially available to the entire community.

If we start appealing to our own private revelations, then the chance of our persuading anyone who doesn't already believe in the same things pretty much evaporates. At that point there's little left of democracy besides group solidarity and the crude exercise of power.
