In response to the inane poll, I thought that I would let people vote on another assertion made regarding John Bear.

There's no question that he rocks. The only outstanding question is, "Does he roll?"

Some clarification is needed, Sir Tracey: Did ya mean:

"Does he roll?" - as in "roll in the hay?

    or

"Does he roll?" - as in "roll up a good, ummmm, joint"?

Ummm, I dunno, ......... but I'd bet he can rock the hay! (and un-roll the haywire mills and shills!)

    Thanks.

    ;)

I'm sorry, but I do not believe you've given a comprehensive listing of choices.

I think that John Bear is the absolute god of distance learning. I've owned every edition of _Bear's Guide_ & _Bears' Guide_ since the 9th edition, plus _College Degrees by Mail_, _Bears' Guide to the Best MBA Degrees by Distance Learning_, _Bears' Guide to the Best Computer Degrees by Distance Learning_, _Bears' Guide to the Best Education Degrees by Distance Learning_, _Bears' Guide to Earning High School Diplomas Non-Traditionally_, _Walston & Bear's Guide to Earning Religious Degrees Non-Traditionally_, and _Finding Money for College_.

Regarding the four people that voted for a "pail of gravel", you've fallen into my trap. You are doomed, you'll be tenaciously hunted down and then taught a lesson via distance learning.

You're doomed now, you pecker of the ox, the freight train is coming with your lesson on it. (please somewhat distance yourself from it for the proper learning experience)

    I'm OK provided it's a distance-learning freight train and not a face-to-face freight train.

Plus he's a very thoughtful, intelligent, witty, generous, and totally delightful individual.

I was just sitting here watching a baseball game. (I love baseball in part because you can view it as a background or a fore ground activity.) and found this silly thing that I have zero recollection of. I thought that it was so brilliantly funny that I thought that I'd bump it. :)

And now also his book _Degree Mills_ co-authored with Ezell.

Bear's Guide (and Bears' Guide) has been a treasured part of my professional library for over 15 years. I purchased "Degree Mills" as soon as it was available and it remains the standard work on the subject. Dr. Bear has performed admirable service to distance learning over the years and has done so in an engaging manner that has been (and continues to be) a delight to read.

Dr. Pina: "Bear's Guide (and Bears' Guide)..."

John Bear: And then there is the 16th edition, in which the publisher, in its mighty wisdom, decided to leave out the apostrophe entirely: "Bears Guide."

--John Bear, who never fails to be intrigued by the foibles of our language, and so I get to share the splendid line that a retired university president just shared with me, allegedly from the Australian Journal of Zoology:
"The rabbits were observed using binoculars."

Yes, so did I. I ordered straight via their website, which promised an exclusive cd-rom with more background information to come along with the book. Needless to say, the cd did not come with the book and never surfaced.

I agree – I used the books for my educational plans and have recommended them to many over the years. His guides have been responsible for a better life for thousands who were able to complete their education.

John Bear: What's this "needless to say" business. Wouldn't it be a pretty silly business plan to promise cds and deliberately not send them? I was never involved with fulfillment, but if you'll send me your name and address, I'll make a copy of my cd-rom and mail it to you. ([email protected])

Does John Bear rock? Of course! He's the leader of the band.

I had volunteered to help compile the CD-ROM (or DVD) and produce a nice menu, etc. Dr. Bear put me in touch with Allen Ezell and we had a couple of nice phone conversations and several e-mails (and almost met in Chicago), but Mr. Ezell got pretty swamped with his new job and I did not want to make a pest of myself, so I dropped it.

    The offer still stands...

The poll didn't get it for me either... John Bear is funny as heck and astonishingly encyclopedic; he's also one of the few people who have consistently striven to portray unaccredited schools accurately: good when good, bad when bad, and unknown when unknown.
