I believe there are a few, starting with Sheila Danzig’s involvement (directly or indirectly) with both entities.

Strangely enough, this is still debatable. When I contacted CEU no member of the administrative staff knew anything about the relationship with MIGS; it seemed to be the work of a single individual.

This is another point of comparison. Government officials appeared to have sanctioned something or the other, but despite numerous requests, no official corroboration of what MIGS claimed ever came to light.

Actually, most were simply figureheads (as per their own admissions). This is another point of comparison.

Uh, what was the light side?

In truth, we have no idea how many degrees were issued or by whom. Sheila could very well have issued one to herself, for all we know ;)

Long Before MIGS came into being, Sheila made quite a few inquiries about how to set something like this up, including querying several members of Degreeinfo. While still shilling for the degree mill American Coastline University, first Sheila denied any plans for a school, then immediately afterwards claimed that the plans called for an entity would be “fully accredited.” This led our own Chip White to post the following message on aed (see here):
    • So which is it? "I don't know anything about it" or "The plans were for a
      *fully* accredited non-US school?

      Can't have it both ways.

And I won't even go *into* "fully accredited" except to say that my suspicion is that the accreditation would be the equivalent of Berne or Greenwich's bogus end-runs.
How prophetic, Chip. Bogus end-runs, indeed—just like St. Regis.

    Re: history question

At one time Degreeinfo had an entire forum devoted to MIGS. Thousands of posts, many of then heated and colorful.

I don't know any of these people, but my impression is that Ms. Danzig was a late arrival in the SRU circle and that her appearance was probably opportunistic.

More likely MIGS and SRU are just similar solutions to the same problem: beating 'GAAP'. They aren't the first schools to use the off-shore flag-of-convenience accreditation ploy, after all.

The proprietors seem to know one another, to be in the same business and to have similar ambitions. But without any inside information, I don't know if it goes beyond that. I doubt it, frankly.

SRU had early connections to Hoyer, didn't it?

You know Galanga, one thing that's always struck me is how cozy the world of 'less-than-wonderful' proprietors seems to be. Everyone seems to know everyone else. Many of them are former partners and colleagues in various ventures, that keep forming and reforming in new and different permutations.

There probably aren't very many degrees of separation between lots of the phony schools, accreditors and evaluators operating out there.

    Re: Re: history question

Depends on what the words 'real school' mean, I guess.

If the ambition was to create a real school, then why not start one the conventional way and then put it on a normal accreditation track like other new schools?

But what we got instead was something appearing from out of nowhere, immediately claiming to possess some kind of weird off-shore accreditation, and loudly proclaiming itself just as good as RA.

So it seems clear to me that the intention from the very beginning was to cut corners, to promote something that wasn't accreditable by American standards, but to market it as if it was.

    You know, it almost worked.

If Ms. Danzig hadn't been visibly associated with it, if she hadn't sued Steve Levicoff for dissing it (he disses everything!), and if it had been professionally fronted by that CSU Monterey Bay dean or somebody, it would probably still be in existence today.

But I get the feeling that the Queen of the Internet saw a loophole and created a school out of nothing just in order to to exploit it. The exploitation of the gimmick seems to have been the heart and soul of the whole enterprise. The education aspect was just kind of a costly annoyance getting in the way of a cool internet marketing scheme.

Compare that to the kind of non-accredited schools that I like. People fly experimental planes, they become monks and study Buddhism, they probe into the stranger corners of human sexuality. They have fascinating intellectual passions that completely transcend operating get-rich-quick schemes. Their schools aren't an end in themselves or merely a stepping-stone to getting rich.

Nice post but that last sentence was a most excellent summary of the core of MIGS, another Danzig get-rich-quick scheme.

Sheila, what future entertainment are you planning for us?!!?!???

(Jake_A enters the room and bows to the experts, contributors, DL historians and encyclopedic brains and investigators here at DI....)

    Thank you, all!

This is a superlatively interesting, fascinating, informative, awe-inspiring and eye-opening discussion!

This is why I love DI no end!

I truly am amazed at the machinations, intricacies, unending paradoxes, unceasing weaving of complex webs of intrigue by the fakers, fake school imprimaturs, academic frauds and shysters, the mill shills, and the brains gone to waste scheming to defraud, bamboozle and enrich at the same time!

Sheila Danzig appears to me to be a mad genius caught in an intricate and posionous web of her own weaving. The possibilities for her redemption appear to be there (unless the mill shills, substandard school financiers, bogus evaluators, and fake accreditors own her outright - mind, heart and soul).

Seems like there is a golden opportunity here for some enterprising and visionary administrators of some legitimate, accredited school (DL or otherwise) to quickly hire her and put her to work, expanding and extending their (legitimate) marketing reach into areas with unmet needs - rural, exurban and suburban. (The urban landscape is littered with the bruised carcasses of expired and expiring degree mills and substandard schools galore)!

But I digress unnecessarily ...... Let the discussions, investigative reportings, facts-based suppositions, and riveting logical analysis of ACAC, MIGS, SRU, ACU, etc. continue!

I sense a New York Times bestseller in the making.

    Any takers?

Dr. Bear? Dr. Douglas? Dr. Pina? TCNixon? Chip White? Marilynd, DesElms, Deb, BillDayson? Bill Huffman? Dr. Galanga? Jack Tracey, Uncle Janko, Gus Sainz, Ted Heiks, Lerner? etc, etc, etc ....... and yes, that includes you too, dear DI member/poster!) - who knows, maybe even Ms. Danzig herself (if she can find it in her heart to be a team player, and not a fastidious litigator).

NetMeeting; collaboration software; document versioning, ......

Guys you have all the necessary tools, DL materials, relevant facts and figures, ..... and requisite encyclopedic brains!

    A lutta continua .........

    Carry on, please!

    :)

    Thanks.

Ok, so what is next for our Sheila Danzig?

    Three tries ..... give up?

Ok, here goes. Maybe, just maybe, a new DWU (no, no, not DWI). DWU or "Danzig Weight-Loss University!", accredited by (....... insert here the name of your creatively-made-up fake accreditor).

The testimonials from its many satisfied customers are quite impressive!

Give credit to the net advertisers and ad-writers!

    Want "to End Insomnia?"

Want "to possess the Sleep Tape that REALLY helps you fall asleep, sleep peacefully throughout the night, and awaken refreshed?"

    LOL.

Here, in the words of Her Majesty, Sheila Danzig, - dubbed by who knows? as "Queen of the Net," - are her own words - marketing hype from the lips of the future Chancellor, Registrar, President, and Promoteur Extraordinaire of DWU:

"I suffered from insomnia for over 20 years. I tried everything. Drugs (over the counter and perscription) and other tapes. NOTHING worked. Then I started listening to Carol?s tape. I am sleeping like a baby now. I am awake and alive for the first time in years. Thank you Carol!"

"Sheila Danzig, "Queen of the Net" "

    LOL.

Are we really talking about that Sheila Danzig of MIGS and ACU fame? Or is this a case of mistaken identity?

    Thanks.

I remember a few years ago when Microsoft forgot to pay the domain renewal for hotmail.com and it went down for a day on a weekend. Some mortal figured out what happened and with his credit card was able to pay Microsoft's bill and bring hotmal back up. I'm sure the Microsoft people not only reimbursed him but also rewarded him otherwise for his effort.
