I'm a little confused about credit by examination. Forgive me for the noob question so here goes......

How do I know which particular credit exam would give me the credits for a particular college course?

For example, one of the core classes in my program curriculum is "Introduction to Statistics (MTH 300)" and........

There's a DSST exam called "Principles of Statistics".

[Besides asking the school] how do I know beforehand if this exam would give me the credits for the core class?

    Hi Pauly

You don't. Many schools only accept very limited CLEP/DANTES credits so asking or refering to that schools web page is often the only way to know what tests are accepted and what credit you will receive for them. Often you can google the schools name along with CLEP to find the answer. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply Dave. Now I understand, I just thought there was an actual methodology to it.

Dave is correct. ALWAYS check official school publications or e-mail/talk to an academic counselor for the school(s) in which you want to attend (transfer the credits to) to see if they accept a particular exam or course. EVERY SCHOOL IS SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT. Double-checking is always the safe way to go.

There kinda' is... in terms of searching, at any rate. Most colleges and/or universities that accept CLEP or DANTES credits will spell it out for you somewhere on their web site or in a PDF catalog file or something.

For example, click here to see the CLEP subject web page on the Southwestern College of Winfield Kansas; and click here to see that same institution's DANTES list. And here's the page where you can link to the pages on their site where they explain how it all works.

Most other colleges/universities have similar pages and/or PDF files.

Click here to see links to over 160,000 such pages on college and university web sites.

Or, if you know the web site URL of the college whose CLEP/DANTES policy about which you're curious, then you would simply type the following search phrase into the Google search box:
    • clep OR dantes site:university'sURL.edu
So, for example, if you want to read any web pages on the U.C. Davis web site that contain the words "CLEP" or "DANTES" (or both words) then you'd type into the Google search box:
    • clep OR dantes site:ucdavis.edu
Which would result in this Google search results page listing 13 (as of this writing) U.C. Davis web pages which contain either the words "CLEP" or "DANTES" (or both words).

    Hope that helps.
