Does anyone in this forum have knowledge about Walden University? Although the school is regionally accredited, they were recently purchased by a huge for-profit corporation called Laureate Education, Inc. (formerly Sylvan Learning Systems).

Ever since the 60-Minutes story last month about for-profit universities, I'm rather leery of such corporate educational conglomerates.

    Your thoughts?

    Walden

I am currently pursiong a master's in education at Walden, after completing a BS with Phoenix. Without reservations, I can tell you that they do an awesome job. The classes are well managed, and no team projects .... so far. Instructors are well qualified to teach their subjects. I am starting my fourth class with them.

They function a little different, in the sense that you take one class at the time. Basically, you graduate with the same bunch of people you started your career with. I like that .... you get to know everyone pretty well.

I highly recomend Walden to anyone interested in advancing their education. I was a little concerned when Sylvan purchased them in 2004, but so far, no sign of big corporate influence.

How long are the classes (5 weeks, 7 weeks, 16 weeks, etc.) or is it a self-paced system?

Classes, for a master's, are eight weeks long. You start the next class the next day after you finish a class. As an example, I finished a class on Sunday, and started one on Monday .... last week; however, it is well paced, and it does not feel like a huge load. The classes always start a little slower and picks up speed in the second to third week. Not a bad system at all.
