This press release arrived today. ---------- Robert Welch University Receives Approval from the State of Wisconsin Educational Approval Board. Becomes Wisconsin's Newest Online University. Appleton, WI - February 16, 2005 - Before you send your son or daughter off to college and invest precious money in college tuition and room and board, consider Wisconsin's newest online university, Robert Welch University. On February 16, 2005 Robert Welch University received the approval of the Educational Approval Board for the state of Wisconsin to function as a degree granting institution of higher education. While the university is headquartered in Appleton, Wisconsin, the degree programs offered by the university will be 100% online, allowing students to study advanced subjects from the comfort of their home anywhere in the world. Robert Welch University takes a non- sectarian, principled approach to higher education and will first offer an Associate Degree with an emphasis in Liberal Arts subjects. No newcomer to the business of educating America's youth, Robert Welch University has sponsored a series of educational youth summer camps nationwide for over 30 years. The university is named after Robert Welch who envisioned "a place where responsible young men and women could go to receive a fundamental education in the accumulated knowledge of history, science, literature, and languages which we, heirs of all ages, have inherited." The liberal arts curriculum of Robert Welch University will represent this vision. In addition, the RWU curriculum will reflect the philosophy and education of the American Founding Fathers and is designed to bring together students with a common interest in preserving America's great heritage through moral, intellectual and civic leadership. Robert Welch University's degree program has been developed by over 15 PhD's, many of whom hold degrees from prestigious Ivy-league universities. One of our distinguished faculty, Dr. Thomas E. Woods, Jr., who received his PhD from Columbia University, recently had his book The Politically Incorrect Guide to American History reach the NY Times Bestseller list. The university's online learning management system delivers to students an enhanced multimedia learning experience. Small class sizes ranging from 6 to 14 students ensure that students receive personal attention and guidance. A focus purely on education and a freedom from the distractions of a traditional university campus environment will deliver the most value to students for their hard earned tuition dollars. The external review board, responsible for reviewing the Robert Welch University degree program and approved by the Educational Approval Board, gave the program rave reviews. Some of the review board's comments are as follows: Dr. Robert Wright, PhD, State University of New York-Buffalo : I have never seen a closer connection between a school's philosophy and its educational objectives, and I've taught at almost a dozen institutions of higher education. The folks at RWU know what they are about. If anything, the program may over qualify students for many types of entry-level positions. They may well be able to compete with lower range holders of the baccalaureate. Dr. Isabel Lyman, PhD, Universidad de San Jose, Costa Rica: Robert Welch University has successfully combined its core courses with the readings and writings of the finest minds of the Western tradition. In some cases, there is an 'embarrassment of riches.' The RWU program will provide students with the educational resources necessary for a cutting-edge college education. Thomas E. Woods, Jr., Ph.D. Columbia University: Robert Welch University is a dream come true for students who want the rigor and standards of a traditional university education without the politically correct nonsense. That doesn't mean students at RWU won't have to do any critical thinking: to the contrary, they'll be exposed to a wide range of perspectives that they're encouraged to discuss and critique. They'll learn everything a student in the typical college classroom learns, but they'll also learn the facts the typical class leaves out. And they'll be taught by distinguished faculty with prestigious degrees. Well, it seems like a legitimate venture, but their logo looks almost identical to Andew Jackson University's logo: http://www.robertwelchuniversity.org/index.php http://www.aju.edu/
After reading futher, I found their tuiton rates rather high to be a new, unaccredited school: Credit Hours Open Tuition Discounted* Tuition (JBS, Campers) 3 $375.00 $300.00 6** $750.00 $600.00 9 $1,125.00 $900.00 Given the alternatives (i.e. accredited local community colleges, and liberal arts colleges offering online programs at cheaper rates AND considering that most DETC schools are relatively cheap) I see no reason for anyone to attend this institution. Of course, their "message" may touch a few hearts, but it ain't workin' for me.
I suspect they intend to pursue accreditation pretty quickly. I think it is a mistake to send inexperienced students through a DL degree unless access to regular schooling is unavailable. It is hard for DL students to persist, pursue, interrelate, etc. Lacking an experiential base only magnifies these issues.
Oxpecker: "...Named after founder of the John Birch Society..." Among other things, he wrote that Dwight Eisenhower was a "conscious agent of the Communist conspiracy," and that Thalidomide was "very likely the cure for cancer," and was kept from the public by the communists in the U.S. government who created a fake deformed baby scare.
Ironic isn't it? The state of "Fighting Bob" LaFollette and the Progressives, as well as Frank Zeidler and the "Sewer Socialists," authorizing a school named after the founder of the JBS! What's next, Nathan Bedford Forrest University?
