    Hello everyone,

I just wanted to see what are the best online/distance Master's programs in IT and/or IS? I've been researching these programs on the Internet and these seem to be the most interesting:

Carnegie Mellon - M.S.I.T. (I also really like their M.S. in I.S. Mgmt but that's not distance)
    Drexel U. - M.S. in I.S.
    Harvard U. Extension - A.L.M. in I.T.
    U. of Maryland UC - M.S. in I.S.
    NYU - M.S. in Mgmt & Systems

The NYU program doesn't seem very technical and more focused on the managerial side of IT. U. of MD requires a bachelor's in the sciences but my degree is in liberal arts. Drexel seems to be rated #1 in U.S. News & World Report and I went down to Philly for an information session but I'm not very sure about the program. They don't have streaming video of their lectures. Harvard has streaming video of their IT program but you have to be in residency for at least a semester (I think I can pull this off, actually). And the program is very technical, even in their Information Management concentration, which is something I'm looking for. Also, Carnegie Mellon's M.S.I.S.M. program looks excellent, but it's expensive and it's not distance. Their sister program is the M.S. in IT, which is distance but doesn't look as comprehensive as the ISM degree.

All in all, I'm not sure which school to go for. I really like the Harvard program (and not just for the name--the program looks exceptionally comprehensive). NYU would be convenient (I work in NYC) but the program looks a little lacking. I took a few non-credit courses in Java at NYU SCPS and, while I learned a lot, the homeworks were fairly easy and I didn't end up with a final project (something the program really, really needs).

So, does anyone have any suggestions? I'm looking to learn and to end up with a degree that is recognizable and would make me employable.

    Thanks.

Some other highly rated programs would probably include:
    • Virginia Tech (MIT)
    • Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (NY) (MSIT)
    • Boston University (MSCIS)

Nova Southeastern University - has both DL and a bricks and mortar presence and does not distinguish them on the degree.

    Thanks everyone for your reply.

Is there anyone out there who could comment on the Harvard Extension program? The streaming videos are really, really nice. It's almost as if I were sitting in a classroom (and those Harvard guys are really market-savvy by posting the 1st 2 lectures of any online course online for anyone to view--I'm almost hooked).

I've never taken a distance learning/online course before and the scariest thing for me is that I fear my mind would wander by just looking at PowerPoint slides or listening to audio online. A videotaped, real lecture would keep me awake, I'm sure.

There's a whole thread about it somewhere around here, and two posters (tescStudent and Dool) are currently enrolled.

Ah, here we are. It had just slipped over onto page 2 of the current threads. http://forums.degreeinfo.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=15376

    University of Denver

I'm looking hard at the University of Denver for C.I.S right now. They look to have a strong program with a variety of concentrations. The also have technology management options.

Brian -- you may want to look into the MIS graduate program offered thru the University of Illinois at Springfield.

I am currently enrolled in my second semester and have been very impressed with the quality & rigor of the curriculum (all DL format with e-tuition rates that make it affordable for RA program).

    their website is: http://mis.uis.edu/
