I had the same concerns as you on this, and have expressed so once recently in this forum.
But after thinking about it there's some things to consider:

    1) Everyone when pursuing a degree or any other achievement looks for the easier/quickest/least expensive route. If not they are stupid no? (swimming against the tide).

    2) Some of us, myself at least, really are anjoying the sudying/learning experience that goes with studying for a degree in my forties, and am content with the fact that there is no magic way to get past those examinations without learning the material. BUT, in some cases , due to the fact that I don't have a test center nearby (in Spain), and each exam entails a very HIGH cost (having to travel to London or elsewhere), there are cases where I will have to sacrifice my learning ideal with fitting in some easy exams so as to make those expensive trips worth it (being able to take several exams in one day).

    3) I am sure that if we were to dwell in any forum dedicated to traditional studying we'd find thousands of young college students also discussing what are the easier routes to achieve their degree.

    4) For some people getting a degree is only a necessary unavoidable piece of paper work that is blocking them from career advancement although they already have the needed knowledge/experience in their field. It's not their fault that we have this system where a degree has become a key to open many doors.

So, in other words, I think I should be open minded about all the possibilities regarding distance education (which, as mentioned before, are not much different from traditional education), including the fact that not everyone has the same motives as I do.

So if that is the case, then the most difficult subjects/courses, meant to be taken by the best and brightest are only taken by the stupid? (unless of course you mean easiest in terms of ease of meeting the requirements, as opposed to an easy requirement level).

No, I mean that if I am required to meet a requirement and have several choices as to the exam to take to test out, I rather take the easiest/least expensive choice, as long as it meets the requirement and my personal criteria as to what I want to learn.

For me the degree is a mean to achieve my goals!!
I am trying to get promoted to a VP position & a degree is the key!!!
Otherwise, I have achieved a lot without a degree , as a Commercial Pilot, Bank manager AVP, Project manager for fortune 100 comp.
I've lived in several countries and speak several languages.
For me the earlier I graduate the better!!!!

I see where you're at. And you're not alone. There are many people in your situation nowadays. Companies have their policies as to formal qualifications and sometimes all that is needed is that piece of paper. In your case I'd go for the easiest short cut to get that degree for sure.

    Question :)

    Hi Datapoly:

I just have a question for you or any who is able to answer. I recently took a Spanish CLEP and received a total of 12 credits. Would taking the test you are talking about possibly help me? I am considering transfering over to Charter Oak State College for a Bachelors in General/Liberal Studies.

    Please advise, thanks, Abner :)

    hi abner,

if you pass the actfl at advance middle level, you get 6 upper credit.

so if you take spanish under actfl, you get upper level credit instead of lower level.

that the most important different i think

Actually languages are divided in 4 categories:
    http://www.languagetesting.com/ace_description.cfm
    French,spanich,italian are category I : 10 lower credits + 2 upper credits at the advanced high/Superior level:
so depending on which category the language is found you will get anywhere from 2 to 6 upper level credits:
And a maximum of 12 combined (Lower/Upper) credits per language.

    Re: Re: UL credits

Login to excelsior college website and download one of their degree catalogs (business, liberal arts, technology).

Or contact excelsior college directly by e-mail or phone and ask for an unofficial review. This will give you a general direction of what you have and what you need to get to graduate.

The unofficial review is NOT binding. The official review is what counts for enrollment and graduation purposes. But the unofficial and the official review are usually the exact same thing.

BTW, 90% of your questions about 'what credits do I need for xxxxx' can be answered by contacting the respective school's officials directly or by reading the official school publications.

    Re: Re: Re: UL credits

    I think there's a misunderstanding, I already enrolled @ excelsior.
In the B.of science Liberal studies option.
I need 18 upper level credit in the art & science not applied professional so I am trying to find quick & easy classes.
I am planning to take the 2 ACTFL language exams for some upper credits, I will probably need an additional 9 upper.
Money is not really an issue as my company is paying for it!
    Thank you much!

Re: Re: Re: Re: UL credits

There is no misunderstanding. Everything I said in my original post you quoted was correct. Talking to an academic counselor or reading the Liberal Arts catalog will give you about 90% of the answers that you need. Another catalog to download is the 'Student Guide to Credit by Examination at Excelsior College'. This will tell you what category each of the most common exams are (clep, dsst, ECE, etc.).

But I will try to help you and others out a little.

    - Taking such exams as ECE:

    ECE American Dream
    ECE Religions of the World
    ECE Ethics, Theory and Practice
    ECE Organizational Behavior
    ECE Research Methods in Psychology

and most of the other upper level ECE exams.

    - The only upper level CLEP that I know of is the language cleps, which they will give you 6 upper level credits of you score high enough.

    - DSST:
    Money and Banking
    Civil War and Reconstruction
    Rise/Fall of Soviet Union

    - This list is NOT complete, but should be enough to get you started.

    - Ask the school about TECEPs that will be accepted.

    - GRE: if you really want to go all out, try taking a subject GRE. Remember, these exams are only offered 3 times a year. You can get up to 30 credits, if you score high enough (the last 18 are UPPER level). Hurry up, as the deadline for the April GRE is coming up FAST http://www.gre.org . All I can say for any GRE is STUDY!!!

Remember I do NOT write the policies for Excelsior College or any college. Always confirm with your academic advisor that these courses or any courses/exams that you take will be accepted into your degree plan and major. You DON'T want to take a whole bunch of courses/exams only to find out that they are not accepted. This is where the academic counselors and degree catalogscome in. If you have any questions, ASK. But make sure you ask the people whose opinion actually counts (the academic advisors at your respective school).

And make sure you download Excelsior's student guide to credit by examination.

Re: Natural science upper level credits

An exam will probably be inappropriate for this, as a lab is probably required. Did you try Excelsior's distancelearn DL courses database?

Excelsior's Pathophysiology exam is worth 3 upper-level credits.
