    Hi all,

I am kinda guiding a friend through some of their degree progress (sorta the blind and dumb leading the blind), and she is at a standstill right now. She has 85 semester hours from a California Community College, primarily in business semester hours as well as the 30 general education requirements. She is only 1-math course from graduating from the CC with an A/S, but she has taken 3 or 4, taken all of the math cleps, but cannot pass math (not to mention that she has spent a lot of $$ on books and websites/tutors & tutorials).

With 85 Semester hours what should she do? Should she go ahead and try to enter Excelsior, Tesc, or Cosc? Or should she wait until she is at the end of her BA to get the math courses done? Also, will any of the big 3 prejudice against her lack of completing her A/S? I want to be smart with my assistance but I am stumped. Please help!

The "big 3" won't care about her lack of an associate's degree. They count credits.

It sounds like a good idea to get this math requirement taken care of earlier, not later. Those skills may be necessary in her major field of study.

There's nothing intellectually different about getting through the math classes compared to her other classes. I feel most people who claim they can't learn math have simply convinced themselves of this and quit mentally whenever they run into a stumbling block, instead of accepting the fact that not everything comes easily. I really struggled with statistics when I first took it, but now I teach it.

    I agree...but not really

    Rich,

I know exactly where you are coming from...there's nothing more satisfying than being able to tackle a difficult obstacle head-on; making yourself stronger all the meanwhile.

"I really struggled with statistics when I first took it, but now I teach it. "

But, surely you of all people should know that we all have our own individual antithesis; and unfortunately, for some its math. However, for many not being able to pass math is a crutch....but there is some validity in the notion that some of us just can't get it; or else we would all be engineers, accountants, auditors, budget analysts, etc. AND

Some of us have a stronger background and foundation than others! If you are recently out of Highschool or have a job where you have to crunch numbers...you still may be familiar with math and should be able to pick up at some point. Math is not like the other subjects. History, English...these things we face everyday....We may see math in highschool and then not again for 20 years (algebra, trig., college math, etc.) except the basic adding and subtracting if our jobs don't required any more or less.

    Anyway,

I sat in an instructor's classroom early mornings and late nights in order to pass College Math and I am certain that it would take me the same efforts to pass today as it did then.
