  1. Hey guys-

I am taking the CLEP American Literature test in a few weeks and wonder if anyone on this board has taken this test?

What did you use to study?

I consider myself pretty well read and just took my Humanities test...so I think I'm gonna be ok.

(I did a search on this subject before posting this...but for some reason...I can't get anything to come up...tried Unixmen, American Literature CLEP..)

So any advice would be great

    Study guides

    Hi Mattt,

I used "Idiot's Guide to American Literature" and "Barrons EZ 101 - American Literature." I also skimmed through the Spark Notes website, hitting the plot and character notes for books that I've never read but knew would be on the test: Great Gatsby, Color Purple, etc.

There is a lot of poetry and it's meaning too.

    I scored 72 out of 80.

I haven't taken that, but I did take Analyzing and Interpreting Literature. If that one would do in place of American Literature, take it instead. Analyzing Lit was so unbelievably easy that I'd recommend it to just about any native speaker of English as a freebie. Seriously, it's just a reading comprehesion test, and doesn't expect you to be able to identify literature.

  5. Humanities

For the Humanities CLEP I used Instacert, Peterson's Cracking the CLEP, the comex Cracking the Clep book, and the College Board CLEP book..

    Scored a 60...

I cannot take Analyzing Literature because that would duplicate I had from previous college experience.

Thank for the advice..I am getting those books you mentioned tomorrow :)

    Matt,

How did you do on American Literature exam?

Please give me some tips, I am going to take it soon.

    Thanks...

  9. TEKMAN-

I didn't study near enough...but still scored a 54. I would buy "The Complete Idiots Guide to American Literature." I used that to study...also....it was a lot more analyzing different passages...that is what hurt me the most as my reading comprehension skills are found to be lacking :)

Make sure to know the difference between Thoureau and Ralph Waldo Emerson...

That is all I can really think of...if you have any specific questions let me know.
    Thanks
