I am seeking a traditional university which grants a TOTALLY online Masters in Adult Ed or Distance Learning. Indiana and Georgia require small residencies of a sort. Checking out U of MD. Any suggestions?

I just finished National-Louis University's M.Ad.Ed. in January, thanks to this board and the Bear's guide. It was *almost* 100% online. There were two weekend residencies in Chicago at the beginning and end. They were strongly encouraged, but not quite required.

The cohort concept was excellent, the workload fun and manageable, the profs ranged from terrible to excellent. Unfortunately, NLU is in the process of being absorbed into Chicago's better-known Roosevelt University. The two schools are hammering out agreements right now, I believe, and NLU will cease to exist, except for its venerable teacher's college branch called the National College of Education. That will remain as, I believe, a department of Roosevelt U.

You will have to enquire what will become of the NLU Adult Ed. department, which is one of the significant ones in the US. (Not that there are many.)

P.S. Doesn't Penn State have an online program? And I think there's one at Buffalo State College.

P.P.S.I must ask, what is wrong with a short residency? I think that's a great concept. I would not have minded a third or fourth weekend.

    Merger talks off

I just checked out the NLU website, and saw a press release issued last week that merger talks have now been called off between these two private universities of similar size. It was full of public relations jargon about the two schools, and I have no sense of what was really going on.

Bottom line, though, is that Adult Education will apparently carry on at NLU.
A good thing, as Martha might say. The program is pretty good, especially if your interest in AE centres on left-leaning social work and not on corporate human resources.

A new NLU online master's program has been starting roughly once a year for the past several years now, and it takes 15 months to complete. Cost is substantial: about $18,000US, plus a few hundred for books.

In my prior post, I meant that a new online master's cohort commences every year or so at National-Louis. They begin a new adult ed group whenever they get together 10-12 students who are ready to go.

I might also point out that the one really poor prof we had actually got booted out, thanks to the strong complaints of our cohort. The administration backed us students up 100%, which was both astonishing and gratifying.

I'd say more people should consider this NLU program: it's quick, it's legitimate, it's well-designed and enjoyable, and the profs are very well-known within the AE field. A couple are even honchos, like Tom Heaney.

Of course, outside of the small world of academic adult education, and outside of Chicago, the school has near-zero name recognition. Except for a confusion factor with a zillion schools called National University.

I believe the University of Linkoping, Sweden has a free online Masters in Adult Ed.

It's offered in conjunction with three English-speaking Universities, USA, Australia, Canada (although the English may take exception to those countries speaking "English") ;) so the curriculum is in English.
