"Data mining"--haven't heard that before, kind of related to confirmation bias.

The Bible really is clear on this, it's very direct, and while I'll acknowledge there are many passages in the Bible that are apparently subject to several interpretations, the pronouncements in the NT are so clear they're overwhelming: Romans Ch 1 and I Corinthians Ch 6 for example. That's not even including the many passages in the OT, which can be used, as they are affirmed by the NT. There are of course people who will devise any number of tortuous paths and improbable turns and Rube Goldberg mental gymnastics to rationalize away that which is strikingly clear, but there are certain scholars who for reasons of their own would, if the Bible said "It's Black", say, "Ah, but it really means white."

I didn't have any natural or learned bias against those who engage in same-sex intercourse. My natural inclination is to be egalitarian--anything goes. I came from a perfectly irreligious household--I never saw a single person in my family say a single prayer; my dad told me when I was a teenager that "I should get as many girls in the sack as I could". Growing up, I don't think I ever heard a single harsh word about anyone based on their sexual choices, homo or hetero. I was raised to be a libertine, pure and simple. I am, like C.S. Lewis described himself, "a reformed pagan". I don't believe this way because it fits any preconceived notion.

    Good conversing with you.

First of all thats a very big SUPPOSE, and I will worry about climbing that mountain once I get to it. Also how dare you compare homo sexualityto things like pedophilia, Nazism? We are talking here about two consenting adults, they are not hurting anyone.

Why did you bring my name into this thread and attack me, when I didn't even post anything in this thread? As I was reading your ignorant posts, I was keeping my mouth shut because I really have lot better things to do with my time then to argue with an ignorant person that has homophobia issues. So just out of nowhere you decide to personally attack me. Why? Because you are doing a very poor job at defending your side and you needed a scape goat. Well I am sorry but thats not going to be me. No one here is giving anyone a free pass, so if you can't take the heat then get out of the kitchen.

I did not bring race into the other thread, and most of the other members that did read the entire other thread will agree with me. It was another degreeinfo member who mentioned that as a black female she finds it very offensive when people compare discrimination against blacks and gays as the same, because she feels that they are very different. Then she started to go on about here past and life as a black female. Also since you are so very upset that race was brought up in the other thread, then why are you trying so hard to bring race into this thread?

Uncle, sorry if we're keeping you up.

No, there's no catching up to be done here. What's at issue here is an interpretation that has already caught up with one's ideology. What you're talking about is a thinly veiled attempt to justify ranking people based on one's ideology, and using the "doctrine" as a user manual for such.

It's an absolutely unwinnable philosophy. I hear the fundamentalists on this thread making a flimsy hedge. "Oh, gay people are ok. They have a right to be gay. Personally I have nothing against them." And so on.

Yet it's important to them to be able to classify gays as "Bad." "It's bad because the Bible says it's so. It's not my call."

It's a gutless philosophy. If gays scare you or make you uncomfortable, just say it. Quit hiding behind the Bible for God's sake. Unfortunately, it's just another example of how religion, more often than not, is divisive, rather than healing. It's a way for everyone to get into their respective camps and start throwing rocks across the river. "I'm not throwing rocks, God is."

    Tiresome? Damn right.

Mike you are clearly and directly comparing Homosexuality to Pedophile, Nazism, etc. You did it in a very eloquent way, but you still did exactly that. Previously you objected strenuously to comparing Homosexuality to being Black. I find your position and views very biased and without reasonable support.

P.S. It was LE who brought race into the previous thread.

    Well said Tom!

Of course what scares me is that some people want to codify this "ranking" into the U.S. constitution.

So you're saying that you're naturally egalitarian, but the NT has taught you to regard gays as bad. Is that it?

And why is it you choose to follow the NT, which, as you say, is quite clear on the matter, versus the OT, which isn't so clear?

And, just curious, why do you follow any doctrine which serves to narrow your thinking, and change an open, egalitarian mind, to one that is more closed and judgemental?

Yes, data mining is a lot like confirmation bias. You can find what you're looking for, if you look hard enough. The Bible Code is an example - apparently meaningful patterns that actually mean nothing.
