Let me backtrasck a bit, I'm not saying that's the case in every institution of higher learning, but that's the way it's been communicated to me. Perhaps other posters can fill us in better. There would of course be opportunities to fill in other coursework through UMass or manyu of the less expensive schools offering graduate finance classes online.

The UMass online MBA requires 3 Accounting courses (9 hrs), 4 Management courses (13 hrs), 3 finance courses (9 hrs), and one Marketing course (3 hrs), it also requires an elective course of 3 hours, which, if your field was Finance, could be 3 more hours of it. Some of the courses might have dual application based on the course title, such as "Production-Operations Management", which is listed under Finance but likely would also be acceptable for Management. It would depend upon how picky your school and regional accreditation agency is.

This 18 cr. hr. rule is sometimes applied very much to the letter, with occasional absurd results. However, I think more often it's applied liberally. In addition to Business Law, I teach American Government and have no graduate credit hours that specifically refer to "American Government" or "Political Science", however, my law degree with the Constitutional Law courses and courses that involved the regulations promulgated by government agencies is considered sufficient to teach both AM Gov and State & Local Gov.

Receiving the UMass MBA online could well be sufficient to teach any number of Business courses or all of them at a four year college or a CC, it just depends on the institution and the accrediting body and how badly the institution wants you--how creative they're willing to be to make your credits "fit".

If you need to fill out additonal credits to get up to 18, I believe that UC Berkeley has an online graduate certificate program in Business where one can specialize in Finance, marketing, etc. and receive grad certification with a hanful of courses. The credits are cheap, and it might be a nice supplement to put on a resume iin addition to a UMass MBA--the Berkeley name, even via DL, wouldn't exactly mar a CV.

    Admission

Hey everyone, I'm really glad to have found this forum. I was directed here by a member in the Business Week BSchool forums.

I have an admissions question about U Mass. I currently hold an undergraduate degree in engineering. I know that if one does not have a formal business background, such as an undergrad in business then they have to take what is called "the foundation course"

    Could somone please tell me:

    a) How to register for this course.

    b) Are u placed after admission into the Online MBA or must i complete this course before applying for MBA admission

    c) Is the foundation course, one course or a set of courses?

    Re: Admission

    a) Info on registration and Foundations here: http://intra.som.umass.edu/mba/applying/foundations.shtml#reg

    b) You apply for admission and are either accepted or rejected. If accepted, your admission is not formally recognized for the purpose of taking beyond two courses until after you've completed Foundations. As I implied, you can also take up to two courses prior to formal admission (I believe these are in addition to Foundations")

    c) Foundations lasts about 8 weeks, it's one course with three distinct sections: Accounting, Economics and Management. You take it through three different professors in the SOM.

I look forward to seeing you in the program! :)

Wow, thanks for such a speedy reply...

Can u also begin classes in the Jan term?

I'll begin my admission right now, with my not so good GPA i'll need all the help I can get. Any admissions advice?

Yes, I believe so. The only admissions advice I can give you is to study really hard for the GMAT, your engineering background should suit you well. BTW--I've been told by those who know that undergrad engineering is not so easy to pull great grades in, I bet you'll be fine.

UMass, IMHO, is one of the top online programs in the USA and it is very reasonable cost wise. You can't go wrong.

MRW or Gildeer, how many courses do you take per term? My undergrad major is accounting so I was thinking about taking MGMT 630 Accounting for decision making and MGMT 632 Information management this January. Thanks for the feedback.

When one graduates from the Online MBA program at UMass, does thier degree say PMBA (Professional MBA) as oppose to just MBA. I am trying ot figure out is you can distinguish between a full time student's diploma and an online student's diploma...

    Newby,
I'm not sure what the diploma says. I'll let you know when I get one. I don't really care what it says. Full-time MBA's are for people who don't have a career yet, or they are changing careers. I've got a successful career and I hope to make it more so with an MBA. If the diploma says Professional MBA on it then that's okay with me.

    w_parker,
I started out taking one class per semester. Now I'm up to two. It all depends on how much time you have. The two classes that you mention are not the toughest ones, so if you took two they would be good choices.
