California State Public Colleges?

For California residents, this is still a very cheap way to earn credits through online courses for those who do not want to try to complete their degrees mostly through testing for credit.
I noticed that Sierra community College http://lrc.sierra.cc.ca.us/dl/online_classes/Index.htm
has a limited amount of courses online and I have heard of the MBA program offered online from CSU Dominguez Hills.

However, what other California community colleges and state universities have a large amount of online undergraduate courses that could then be transferred to a school such as Excelsior?
I was planning on transferring courses from Athabasca University to Excelsior, but it seems it would be much cheaper for California residents to take courses through online courses offered through CSU and CA community colleges (if all the needed courses were available online throuh those schools).
Which CA public colleges and universities offer the best selections of undergraduate courses via distance education?

There's a quite a few CA community colleges that offer online classes, but one of the things I noticed is that they fill up very quickly so if you are non-resident or non-returning student you probably won't get in because the all of the returning students get priority. Although I'm not sure why you are limiting your scope to CA community colleges? For example, Colorado community college system has dozens if not hundreds of online courses and very cheap too.

But, if you are not a resident of the state, the Colorado community college online courses probably are not that cheap.

I may continue to consider Athabasca even though it is more expensive, because I think the courses can be completed at a faster rate than the online courses through CA and Colorado state schools. Is that true?

Colorado actually doesnt have resident vs. non-resident tuition and is around $140 per unit or like $420 per class which really is still a bargain. Iowa has their community college consortium as well that is a bit cheaper than Colorado at $385 per class.

    Check this site out:

California community colleges are $18 per unit or $54 per course.

    Better deal. :)

California Community Colleges are indeed a great bargain for California residents. Tuition is $26.25 per semester unit plus registration fees of around $30. Community colleges only offer lower division credit.

What students complain about are high cost of books and parking fees.

The state increased tuition for 2004-2005. Here is the updated tuition schedules.

    RESIDENT ENROLLMENT FEE (Tuition)
$26.00 per unit for California residents.

    NON-RESIDENT ENROLLMENT FEE (Tuition)
$175.00 per unit ($149.00 per unit, plus $26.00 per unit enrollment fee)

Non-resident tuition will be charged to students who have not established residency in the State of California for a period of one year prior to the day before classes begin.

Thanks for the updated information. My local college, Fresno City College has, apparently, not updated its website with the new fees. Still, a tremendous savings.

    Re: try Foothill college

I remember when I was looking at such things that Foothill College offered quite a few courses.

CA community colleges may be the cheapest way to take online and traditional courses from a U.S. school.

Does anyone know offhand which California State Universities offer the most upper division courses online and has anyone compared the experience to taking online courses through the Canadian college Athabasca Univeristy?
I believe you can complete online courses at Athabasca at your own pace.
Are all the community college and CSU online courses traditional semesters or quarters in length with set start and end dates?

Here is the URL for the California Virtual Campus Catalog:
    http://www.cvc.edu/catalog/
It is a collection of most of the colleges and universities (public and private) in CA.

Here is a URL that lists the members of the CVC:
    http://www.cvc.edu/campuses/
It also shows the number of DL courses that it offers

Are all the community college and CSU online courses traditional semesters or quarters in length with set start and end dates?

The two school systems have a campuses that operate on both the quarter and semester systems.

This is the URL to the Extended Education Services for the CSU System:
    http://www.gateway.calstate.edu/extension/

    Hope this helps

Actually, it depends on when you went -- start adjusting for inflation, etc. No doubt the community college system in California is a great deal AND we've got a lot of really good teachers in the system.

I started out at San Jose City College and have never regretted that. It was a great opportunity for me and I appreciate the taxpayer investment -- even now that I am the taxpayer!

I noticed many CSU online courses are listed as "extended education" courses and do not fall under the normal tuition rates for the school. Some courses cost in the same range as a private school.

The state generally does not subsidize courses and programs that are available through distance learning methods, particularly if it is through "extended" or "continuing" education. The way I look at it, if the course is not through the main university, it will not be subsidized. Therefore, they will pass on all costs to the student. Still, many of the programs that I looked at are still well under $1000 per course.

Hmm, so the community college courses at $26 per unit for CA residents is the real bargain.
Do any of the CSU schools offer online courses that are not considered "continuing education or an "extension" program?

Yes, the CSU that I attend in San Bernardino does offer a limited amount of online courses through the main university. As for the other CSUs, I can't say. But I wouldn't doubt it.
