If one were to obtain a degree from a university that was not accredited at the time of admission, but IS accredited at the time of graduation, would the degree obtained be considered one from a university that IS accredited? I ask because I'm curious about North Central and they have been granted 'accreditation for candidacy' - anyone have any experience with North Central? Thank you, Mary

For academic purposes and virtually all employment purposes, yes.

Northcentral is a candidate for accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association.
Note that some candidates never achieve accreditation and that some candidates frequently apply for continuing candidacy status. Thus, the eventual accreditation of Northcentral (at least, by the time you earn your degree) is not guaranteed.

This has been discussed at great length on this board. I recommend a search through its threads. A degree earned before accreditation is technically one from an unaccredited school. But in practice this is not usually the case. People tend not to compare graduation and accreditation dates.

No distance learning school since the late 1980's has been a candidate for accreditation and not gone on to accredited status. The last to do so was International Graduate School, somewhere around 1987.

Rich - this is encouraging - how long does it normally take for the actual process to be completed, and do you think that fees would go up drastically, or would they give you a few years of gradual increases. Right now North Central's tuition is just a few dollars more per credit hour than CEU but I'd hate to get started with $160 a credit hour (that looks so good), and then get caught having to finish the degree at $800 a credit hour, or something outrageous. Thank you, Mary (who is weighing all the options)

Rich, is there a way to prove my legitimacy and quit this war that seems to be going on -I would really like some assistance yet instead of advice or opinions, I'm getting blasted - lately it's on Bears - Bears does divide it's book into sections of schools to avoid and schools that seem to be 'real' and a section on schools to stay away from and then a section on questions and answers - I've been using Bears for over 10 years - you mention calling you, but we didn't talk over the phone, we only emailed and I can't find your personal email that I used this past week, I'm sorry but can you send it again. And, is there a test for me to take for legitimacy?????? Thank you, Mary

Nortcentral University recently posted a tuition increase as expected. The following is posted on their website http://www.ncu.edu

    Tuition Increase
On October 1, 2001 our tuition will increase:

    Now On October 1st

    Undergraduate $165/unit $200/unit

Enroll before October 1st and we guarantee your tuition of $165 per unit will remain the same for your entire degree program.

Contact Admissions at 800/903-9381 or email to: [email protected]. Do not miss this opportunity...tuition will never be this low again.

I wouldn't expect tuition rates to rise significantly until after accreditation is granted. Then, I would expect to see some sort of "enroll now before the rates go up" kind of promotion. I doubt if students already in the pipeline will get burned.
