Ronald Reagan would be the last person to ever claim that he was. Everyone makes mistakes, even presidents. Some people, out of their own humility, choose to accentuate the good that their fellow men do, some are hell-bent on pointing out the flaws of others.

In hindsight there is just history to judge where the balance tips. There will be those who will insist on scrutinizing and reciting the flaws, misteps and mistatements. If it makes them feel more important to do so, so be it and may God bless them real good.

Others will choose rather to concentrate on the good that their brother's and sisters did in their lives and the good things that we learned from them, so be it and God bless them real good.

There is ALMOST nothing that any of us learn or experience in life that is totally good, or totally evil, most of the time whether it turns out to be good or bad lies in what each of us choose to do with it.

 

Tom, why don't you just come out and state the obvious....you're infuriated that President Reagan was so popular, and is receiving so much love & respect this week.

Bruce, it's hard to be furious with a reaction. His policies made (make) me furious. Why don't you admit that you are furious with Kerry because he slighted you? So where does that leave us?

Reagan was good at making people feel better, and convincing the masses that what was good for only the richest was also good for them. He appealed to small-mindedness and fear mongering. Lots of people want to blame the ills of the U.S. on all the stupid lazy minorities. Few have the guts to come out and admit it (one might be branded a racist. "Those damn democrats made that such a stigma in the sixties"). Reagan gave people the out. Now they could do it in the name of democracy and the pride of being an American. Never mind that the repercussions of such policies had devastating effects on that segment of society that many wanted to eliminate in the first place. Reagan made it possible to be a racist and be a great American - something this country was waiting for.

Again, he's your hero, not mine.

I'm really not very interested in politics. I don't read the political threads very often and post in them even less often. This thread has raised a point that I find interesting. Is it in bad taste to criticize a public figure after they have died but before they are buried?

I think that it is definitely bad taste to be overly critical of a private individual in the presence of someone that is grieving their death. I'm not so sure it is fair to try to extend this to public figures though? Of course I would consider it rude to be overly critical of President Regean if I was in the same room with Nancy or other close relatives. That isn't the situation here though. Now if I thought that someone was really devastated by President Regean's death, even though they didn't personally know the man then I guess that I could consider it thoughtless and even rude if I then insulted the ex-president. I don't think that is the case here though?

The only argument that I've heard as to why it is considered rude is because it is disrespecting the office of the president. I'm sorry I can't buy that argument at all.

This is a sad site. Even for me who did not think he was a good president this is away beyond the pale. I guess freedom of speech never was synonymous to civility and decency.

I see the old "left-right" arguments used. I always liked these two quotes:

1. Pat Paulsen--"I'm neither left wing or right wing; I'm the middle of the bird."

2. Scoop Jackson--"I'm not a hawk or a dove, I just don't want my country to be a pigeon."

 

You children are very entertaining. I wonder if you would carry on like this if you were all in the same room. Why must everything be left-right, conservative-liberal, democrat-republican? Reagan was able to not polarize the nation like his successors have done. He knew when to turn the politics off.

 

Labels today really have no real relevance. When I was growing up in the South a liberal was someone who believed in civil rights and a conservative was someone was believed in states' rights.

in the '60's a liberal opposed the Vietnam War and a conservative supported it. Of course you will find many liberals who supported it and many conservatives who opossed it.

Labels may only identify one with one or two issues and may link one to another with whom one may only share one viewpoint.

I oppose capital punishment. To many this makes me a liberal. I oppose abortion. To many this makes me a conservative. This is why I like to think of myself as a moderate or a progressive.

UC Berkeley is so far left it could never turn right so how could any conservative sharply divide the faculty at UC?

There was something on page 1 about Reagan being anti civil rights. He did make Martin Luther King Jr's. birthday a national holiday.

I always get a kick out of the liberal mindset. Always pee, whine, and moan about people being mean spirited, not tolerant, etc. but then come out with lines like the one above.

Got to admit one thing, Reagan had humor, im still waiting for the modern Liberal icon of Hillary to ever crack a smile.

I was not able to watch the funeral service today so I taped it and just completed viewing it. I was thoroughly disgusted with both Bill and Hillary.

They looked bored and disinterested during President Bush's euology (one of the finest eulogies I've ever heard). Clinton had a smirk on his face.

Are they that egotistical that they were mad they were not the center of attention?

On the other hand, President and Mrs. Carter were attentive. Even Al Gore was attentive and appeared moved by Bush's speech.

The Clintons have to be the worse presidential couple to have ever occupied the White House. Gorbachev had more respect than they did!

My rankings were about attitude (first ladies) and job performance (presidents). I was thinking about the ex-presidents and their ages.

Clinton, 57 (will he ever grow up?)
Bush, 80 (birthday tomorrow)
Carter, 79 (still mentally acute)
Ford, 90 (looks great for his age.).
