I know someone looking seriously at going to Aston in the UK for their PhD in Business. It seems perfect, 4 years, part time, AACSB, VERY low tuition, great reputation. Is anybody in this program? It seems to good to be true? Any thoughts on the program, classes, school, etc. etc. Any input would be great, and thank you in advance.

    Hi,

Aston U. just came 21st= with Glasgow in the UK Sunday Times listings and was the 2nd placed of the eight UK Colleges of Advanced Technology (CATs) that became universities in the 1960's ... Loughborough was 10th.

Others were Brunel, Strathclyde, Salford etc.

It is a city centre university in Britain's second city - Birmingham with lots of resources and facilities.

    Good luck,

    Neil

I am considering this program myself. As far as I know they require several residence meetings so depending on where you live this maybe "nightmarish". This is the only problem I see. For local students this program may be awesome but I am not so sure if it is so good when you are abroad. Perhaps someone else want to comment on this.

For Uk/EU citizens the price is very affordable.

    Cordial greetings

    How many visits per year?

    Aston

From what I understand, it's only 4 to 5 days per year. Aston Business School is usually in the Top 10 or 20 European Business schools.

The tuition is affordable, but don't kid yourself, Aston Research is world-class and can compete with Oxford and Harvard any time.

The catch is that Aston won't just take anyone.... an online degree from Walden, NCU, Pheonix, etc...... won't get you in. They're after serious researchers.

Yes, Aston is EQUIS, AMBA and AACSB endorsed and accredited.... so it's right up there with the best.

Your collegue better be good to get in.... ;-)

    Re: Aston

Yes, I think he has spoken to the Director and has graduated from a very high end school. He asked me my thoughts, and it seemed there should be a catch, but maybe not. If they are so up there, I wonder why they don't charge more, but hy, I don't think we will complain!

OK, this is what they sent me last year. I can scan it if someone is really interested.

Guidelines for admissions of External Research Students

    1........
    2........

    3. A minimal annual stay at Aston equivalent to 24 working days is required in order to discuss progress with the internal supervisor. This stay can take the form of either a single block of time, or it can be divided between several visits. Supervisor's Annual Reports would have to record the dates of visits.

    4........

What follows is mine. For the pre-dissertation phase you are to visit their campus for one week but once your dissertation begins theese guidelines apply. I don't know if you can work out a better deal with a supervisor. I am just quoting literally what they say. If you know of someone who got around this policy, please, let us know.

    Cordial greetings

Aston is really a top school ....

    Dear All,

Yes, I agree Aston is a top business school.

What I wonder though is why it never gets mentioned in
the business week (US) or financial times (UK) rankings?

But you can tell from their programs that they will not
just admitt anyone. I got the feeling when I contacted
them this year to explore their programs that they are
nterested in people with many years of work experiences
as well as the research topic/areas must be cutting edge.

  9. I totally agree. You are absolutely 100% correct. Anyone who does not agree must be a mill shill.
