How did you find this forum?

I came across the link to Degreeinfo as I was looking for the latest updates to Bears' Guide on www.degree.net. Degreeinfo had been up for several months and I found the people to be very pleasant and well informed. It has become, for me, one of my most useful sources of current information on distance learning (which is an important part of my professional field).

I have yet to find an online forum that is comparible to Degreeinfo.
Besides, it has allowed me to correspond directly with John Bear, whose work I have admired for many years.

I was searching for a DL program, and Google led me onto another forum, where I naively posted advocating RA degrees, subseequently got toasted for advocating RA, then saw a link here and found a forum which was better suited to my purposes (learn about RA programs).

 

Search- Distance Learning-

Yahoo.

 

Dr. Dr. Dr. Miltong Leland Goldblatt...

suggested I might find the site useful.

Actually, I'm an A.E.D. refugee, too.

The good news is that I have only to take my Statistics course final to complete my Excelsior degree requirements. Almost there!

In my case I was a "reader only" at AED. I ocassionally posted something. When this site was founded I moved here. I left one month pass before I signed in. The atmosphere at AED was terrible with a couple of trolls spoiling the entire communication and exchange on info. This place was a haven. In the meantime my wife is in her third year in a PhD program we found thanks to this site, her supervisor is world authority in her field of study, and we can easily afford it. We have been very lucky. Hopefully I can find myself that distance learning Phd in Engineering that seems to be stubbornly running away from me.

I decided to look for a way to finish a bachelor's degree that wouldn't be too painful or too expensive. I must have been on about hour 30 of looking at different schools, programs, information, etc., when I must have hit a link that gave me another link and finally I landed here. From here I followed over to Lawrie Miller's site, read that at a fevered pitch and then ended up back here to see if it was legitimate. Low and behold, people here were kind enough to answer my questions.

And the rest is history. I visit here every day. Have made some nice cyber-friends, am working on finishing a BS and have actually applied to a graduate program found by one of the poster's here for me that fits my plan like a glove. I love this place.

 

I don't recall. I think I stumbed across this forum while doing a search on a school. I think a portion of one thread came up on the search engine I was using. If memory serves I was searching the Moody Bible Institute.

 

I was a lurker on AED too. saw a post about degreeinfo and the rest is history!

I found DegreeInfo.com when I did a search for discussion on CCU. I've been hooked on it since I found it.

 

Started with "Bear & Bear's College Degrees by Mail" which I purchased after I received a comp copy of "Accredited College Degrees by Correspondence" published by someone named "Herald Crenshaw III". Then lurked at a.e.d. till it got too bad. Then I came over from a.e.d. when the forum was established. Lurked here for six months till I saw the level of the forum's administration then registered here.

 

I was originally a participant over on AED.

Years ago, I was browsing in the old San Mateo Barnes and Noble and stumbled on a copy of 'Bear's Guide'. I leafed through it, was hooked by the cartoons, was won over by the candor, and I told myself 'I can do this!' So I bought the book, ended up applying to CSUDH and eventually got an M.A. out of it.

While I was plugging away at doing that, I started reading AED to see what the other DL-ites were talking about.

When AED hit the iceburg and started listing madly, I was one of the people fighting to get into the lifeboats.

 

I found this site after being a member of another forum.

Came over on the maiden voyage from aed. AED - the perfect example of the darker side of the internet revolution.

 

I was doing some google searching regarding distance learning and stumbled on the main page, clicked the forums button and the rest is recent history.

 

Finding Forum

I was a reader of the a.e.d. forum. When it was invated by trolls, this forum was created and Dr. Bear invited me to join here, so I gladly came.

Unmoderated- doesn't seem to work but maybe the trolls are just people who have been abused by certain individuals and are employing a levelling factor, irrationality. It must be comforting to think of them being employed by mills, as that is a commercial reason that makes sense. I think they are just ticked off people.

I first discovered the forum at about.com and got directions here from a shill from MIGS.

 

Wow, shill from MIGS! Unless you're speaking of Rich or Sheila, that's the first ever evidence I've heard of ANY marketing efforts for MIGS, outside of a handful of posts Sheila did.

(Apologies to Rich. I never considered him a shill for MIGS, but some folks did, which is why I'm making the statement.)

While we're on it, I guess I found(ed) this forum when a.e.d. went crazy, I had some extra server space, and decided that the list-based solution that Bruce had set up wasn't catching on very quickly.

I can remember driving in my car, sometime in January of whatever year it was, talking on the cell phone with John Bear, and trying to decide what name to register. We (well, mostly John) came up with a bunch of ideas, the coolest of which was "saneharbor.com" but ultimately I kinda decided that a descriptive name was probably the best choice... and degreeinfo.com happened to be available.

I never in a million years would have thought it would have grown into the largest distance learning discussion resource on the Net, or that so many people would come to rely on it both for community and for reliable information.

But it's been very gratifying to read all of the stories of people who narrowly avoided being ripped off by fake schools, or people who had no idea what was possible and learned of their options through this board and earned degrees via distance learning.

So here we are... it's been really interesting for me to read where people have learned about DegreeInfo as well.
