According to my lastest status report from Excelsior, I've finally finished the requirements for a BS-CIS.

It's been quite a long haul since I took my first college course during the summer of 1968. Much of my course work has been part-time using just about every medium/venue possible. I vaguely recall enrolling in my first correspondence course which I never completed in the 1970's while I was still in military. I even enrolled in Empire State back in the 80's but terminated my enrollment when I realized they really didn't offer what I wanted back then which was a degree in Computer Science. In the final analysis, I found that "testing-out" is the approach that works best for me. I was able to complete the 45 credits that I needed for my degree by "testing-out" the requirements over the last 3 years or so.

As for Excelsior, I would only recommend their CIS degree program to someone who had a lot of credits and certifications to start. Excelsior no longer offers exams in CS subjects so it doesn't make sense to me to have to get approval from Excelsior to enroll somewhere else, pay additional tuition/fees and then have to pay to have transcripts sent to Excelsior. In addition, it nearly always took numerous letters/emails/telephone contacts to get all this sorted out.

Anyway, I've already started to think about what to do next and am actively gathering information about graduate programs. Hopefully the next degree won't take me 30+ years to complete.

    Excelsior BS-CIS

    Thanks for all the congrats.

I would rougly estimate that Excelsior cost about me between $100-$125/credit including costs for Excelsior tuition and fees, external exam costs and transcript fees. I completed 31 credits while enrolled in Excelsior.

I earned 14 credits just before I enrolled in Excelsior via Microsoft certification exams.

I originally enrolled in Excelsior's BS-CIS "exam only" option in 2001 which had a fixed cost based on the number of credits one needed for the degree and while Excelsior still gave ICCP exams. This program was terminated at the end of 2002. I suspect that current costs at Excelsior are a bit higher.

I was not required by Excelsior to take Discrete Math but do have 1 College Algebra course, 3 Calculus courses (Cal III was titled Multivariate Calculus with Linear Algegra) and 1 Differential Equations course all of which I earned while working on an AS Degree in Engineering Science. I am taking SWT's Discrete Math now as preparation for the GRE CS but am concerned it might be a bit too lightweight for this purpose.

My advisor said she anticipated that the degree would be conferred in April so I expect receive the diploma by mid-May.
