The NCA/Higher Learning Commission has recently granted 'American Public University System', the parent of American Military University, Candidacy status.

I guess APUS was hoping to skip candidacy and go directly from application to accreditation because of their DETC accreditation, but that doesn't seem to have happened.

There's still nothing on the APUS website.

At least this is honorable--as is APUS.

AMU/APU have some really great looking programs. As I recall they even have Holocaust studies under one of their Masters programs.

You could keep going to school and going and going.

It betided as expected. It’s apparent to all that AMU/APUS will receive NCA candidacy and subsequently go on to receive full RA and nobody here expected them not to. AMU is in fact a great school.

    Bill,

Thanks for the good news. I did not expect to hear anything until March.

I suppose that NCA will allow them to go ahead with their new doctoral programs.

Which brings up many questions. Do they give up DETC accreditation while still an R/A candidate? Do they wait? Does DETC accredit their first domestic doctorate or somehow call it outside the scope of their accreditation? Does the DETC lose one of their best schools?

Every time I read their acronym, APUS, I shudder. What is with the accredited schools that don't think through their names nearly as much as the degree mills?

    Names

I agree Dave - they need to change the name of the holding company and the university. If they become RA then I'd think they would want to broaden their base of potential students beyond active duty and retired military. The two titles give the perception that they are public or military entities - maybe that it what they were after in the beginning.

Since they are in Charles Town, WV, how about the University of Charles Town. Or some non-location related name, like Capella and Argosy use.

Charles Town is best known for its dog track, so that might not be the best choice. :) Besides, the town constantly is confused with Charleston, the capital of West Virginia.

The Shenandoah and Potomac rivers have their confluence at nearby Harper's Ferry, but unfortunately there are universities named after both geographic features.

They're also close to Antietam, though. Perhaps naming it after that would be appropriate for an institution with a military focus.

Gosh! Is the name Harper's Ferry University really already taken? If they were to become Antietam University, wouldn't they have to move to Sharpsburg, MD? That would put them outside of NCA and mess up the RA process.

    APU Doctorates?

    Do they offer a Doctorate?

I have never seen it on the website.

    Re: APU Doctorates?

While I was in my first go-round with AMU (2001-2003), there was an announcement in one of their monthly student newsletters that they were pursuing RA through the Southern Association and were planning on implementing doctorates. There was a post here somewhere awhile back saying that the State of Virginia had approved them to offer a professional doctorate called the DMS (Doctor of Military Studies) but that apparently got shelved (unfortunately). I was advised by telephonic communication with someone in the Registrar's Office that doctoral programs would await RA and that there would be a big announcement when that happens. Now, of course, they have moved from Manassas Park, Virginia (which is under the purview of the Southern Association) to Charles Town, West Virginia (which is under the purview of the North Central Association), so the RA process starts anew. - Theo

    Ted, DUDE!!!!

Are you trying to make it into Guinness for the most masters degrees or what?

    :D

Seriously, I was wondering if you'd share your impressions and experiences with AMU with those of us who are considering it?

General stuff, like what do you like best, is there anything you don't like, is there anything you wish you knew BEFORE you enrolled, advice for the rest of us?

    Thanks, Ted!!!!!

    Re: Ted, DUDE!!!!

    (1) Either that OR possibly, given that I'm a total screw-up, I might just be trying to stay in grad school long enough to bring up my "batting average" to .500 as far as master's degree completions goes.

    (2) You might want to look up a thread called "Questions for Ted Heiks."

    Ted,

I sure hope that AMU starts a doctorate program in history or military studies. That would be a kick. This would also be right up your alley. I might even give it a shot. In your estimation, what are the chances they would start a doctorate program by 2006? 2007? or 2008? . Please give numbers to each year as only a historian can. LOL

It sounds like once RA is granted, the PhD programs will be implemented. And I've been told that once NCA grants candidacy, actual accreditation is all but assured. 100% x 99% = 99%. I'm told by a previous AMU thread-writer that RA will probably take about two years. So, I'm guessing there's about a 99% chance of an American Military University PhD in Military History (hopefully with a concentration in Civil War History) by 2007.
