    Dear all:

What's the scoop on CSM Institute of Graduate Studies???

From their website, it states that: "CSM Institute of Graduate Studies is authorized to grant degrees by virtue of its several charters and permits, namely: the Charter of the Province of Manitoba, Canada, as a degree granting institution; the State of Utah Charter issued to CSM-IGS authorising it to grant Bachelor, Master and Doctoral Degrees; the Board of Regents, Department of Education of the State of Louisiana registration authorizing it to grant Bachelor, Master and Doctoral degrees; the Netherlands Department of Education authorization to grant degrees via distance study."

Specifically, CSM claims to have the charter of Manitoba, Canada as a degree granting institution. Does that mean they have the same degree granting authority as the local colleges, and thus legitimacy??

    Let's discuss.

    Regards,

    Byran

A Canadian University based in India?, There are a lot of indian nationals here but this a bit difficult to believe. I few words anything that is not a member of the association of universities and colleges of canada is not accredited in Canada.
    http://www.aucc.ca/en/aboutindex.html

"Canada has no formal system of institutional accreditation. Membership in AUCC held in conjunction with a provincial charter may be accepted in lieu of institutional accreditation. Graduate programs and professional schools such as law, nursing, medicine and engineering have rigorous discipline-specific accreditation procedures. "

The CSM (Canadian School of Management) is accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council, as are its two affiliates, the University of Action Learning and the International Management Centres. They're all owned by the same company, and CSM has been conducting programs on behalf of IMC for some time now.

CSM's origins are as murky as the current situation you describe. They "back-doored" education officials in Ontario by first establishing Northland Open University, ostensibly in the Northwest Territories, but it didn't have a physical presence there. Territorial law is significantly different than provincial law, and it allowed for this kind of thing to happen. Northland then established the CSM in Toronto, where it remains in operation today. Ontario prevents CSM from awarding academic degrees; for a long time this was done by Northland Open (up to and including doctorates). Now that function has been assumed by IMC. One completes a CSM program and receives a degree from IMC (or Surrey or Southern Cross, or who-knows-where-else).

CSM-IGS is merely an extension of these activities. That CSM has gone and gotten permission to award degrees in several jurisdictions isn't surprising when you consider their past as described above.

If one takes a CSM program and receives a degree from an otherwise accredited school, I guess the desired outcome is met. But the process in doing so is, to be as kind as possible, weird.

Not true. There are some small, private schools which are not members of aucc but which are legitimate/accredited. There is/was a Canadian government web-site which listed legitimate Canadian colleges and Universities... not all were members of aucc.

They are one and the same. The link you provided takes one to a page with a great deal of information about one George Korey, founder of the Canadian School of Management and Northland Open University. CSM-IGS stands for "Canadian School of Management-Institute of Graduate Studies.

As usual, CSM is grasping for recognition as an accredited institution. As I described earlier, they kinda sorta are. DETC accredits them directly. DETC also accredits their degree-granting partners. Southern Cross University (Australia, meets GAAP) "endorses" some CSM/IMC programs, etc.

It gets wierder still. A company called TASMAC runs CSM's programs in India and Bangladesh. TASMAC has some troublesome affliations. Here is a link to a portion of their site listing their affiliations. Note the Barrington connection. Click on it to see a very deceptive description of Barrington's "accreditation." (They say Barrington is organized along the lines of DETC's standards, then go on to note Barrington's phoney accreditor.)
    http://www.tasmac.ac.in/html/affiliations.htm

Also, here is a list of some very bad accrediting agencies accrediting TASMAC:
    http://www.tasmac.ac.in/html/accreditions.htm

It is all very deceptive, and sheds no glory on the Canadian School of Management.

There is a difference between legal and accredited,if a university is charted by a canadian province is legal, but being a member of the aucc is the equivalent of the american accreditation, one graduate of a non-aucc university should expect difficulties getting the degree accepted by a aucc member, is not a rule but is the guide of most of the faculties

The Institute is recognized World Wide and accredited to International Accreditation Commission and has legal authorization to grant the degree authorized by Manitoba and the States of Hawaii and Iowa.

As per Canadian Law The institute has full legal right as it's registered body and comes under Non Profit Organization of IAUS.

Wrong information about the college and Institute should not been published on site without having any deep knowledge and clue about the subject

Newsflash! One-poster exhumes thread after FIFTEEN YEARS and waggles her finger at DI! Says DI has no clue. Almost unbelievable!

Here are two older DI threads that should help clarify the situation:

You can read experts John Bear, Rich Douglas, et al.

The founder, George Korey, died in 2007. Here's a page on him. http://www.federacjapolek.ca/nowy/image/2009_images/polish_spirit_persons/korey-krzeczowski.pdf

TASMAC, in Pune and Bangalore, India, formed an alliance with CSM in 1990. That was discontinued long ago. The current info on TASMAC site still indicates that TASMAC degrees are validated by University of Wales. Strange, since that overseas validation scheme (over 200 schools) exploded in controversy a few years back , I have no idea what's really happening at TASMAC these days. When the validation scheme erupted, Uni. of Wales instituted a teach-out provision for currently-enrolled students at the overseas schools. Page here:

I don't think it's possible today to get a degree from CSM - no matter how authorized (or not). No website. I notice Kristen didn't give us one, either.

I am wondering how such a great school doesn't even have a web site.

Hi, My employment hangs on the above accreditation for CSM IGS. My employer had done background verification and the Canadian government had stated that this CSM IGS university does not exist. I would have to leave my employment if I cannot provide a valid proof. My final degree certificate states that the degree is accredited by Global Accreditation Commission. Request to confirm if this is valid and the degree is also valid.

Hi In reference to the above thread on Employment verification, you confirmed in 1990 the CSM-IGS has Accreditation with TASMAC to grant degrees on the distance education in India, can you confirm how many years it was active and when it got stopped.

and I am not sure to whom to approach the employment verification on My master's degree. If the status is active during the period the degree was issued. Can you help us to validate the degrees if they are issues lawfull degrees I can provide you the soft copies or you can share the verification emails I can send you separately for your verification?
