If anyone does need 10 degrees coming from the same place - I think they should first examine their motivations - preferably, with professional help.

Any news yet on your doctoral diploma, Carlton? Just asking, not a wisecrack.

I will have an update soon but as of now still waiting. Contacted the Dean of Azteca in January and he has reached out to get updates. I contacted UCN a few days ago and am waiting on a response.

Thanks. I wish you the best with this, Dr. Coleman. I'm serious, about that. 100%.

If all else fails, (and I sincerely hope it doesn't - I'm on your side), there's a guy these people should meet. I believe he's a traqueto (hit man). His is the first pic in this article. If there's a problem, just send 'em a copy of the pic. That should do it. :)

Shouldn't have to. Reads like a warning label for cigarettes or something.

Right. But there are times when you shouldn't have to --- but you really do. I think this might be one.

Just to let everyone here know, I reached out to Azteca again earlier this week and the registrar messaged me back yesterday saying my paperwork and UCN diploma are ready. They are invoicing me for $200 worth of shipping fees and $400 worth of apostille fees for everything to be legalized and sent to me.

Not clear on the value of the apostille. It's really just like a notary attesting that the document isn't a forgery.

I've received every single one of my 7 degree diplomas in the mail, including one sent internationally. No one ever charged a shipping fee.

    I've often wondered that myself.

Yeah, something about their request doesn't feel right. I know of two members here that have a UCN PhD degree that didn't go through Azteca. I will reach out to them and ask did they pay similar fees.

Apostille is absolutely useless. As Rich said, all it does is attest that the attached document is genuine - i.e. not a forgery. I don't think anybody is EVER going to ask you for it. It has long been a common device with degree mills. They usually try to convince uninformed people that an apostille attests to legitimacy or legality - making their (bogus) degrees legit - which of course it doesn't. They used to cost $100 - I guess things have changed.

These people at Azteca seem incredibly mercenary and merciless. I think they have it down to a science - or a torture. I'm wondering if it ever ends! I sincerely hope this is it....

Some colleagues and I were discussing propios again today, and an interesting cross-over idea came up: TESOL/TEFL propio programs.

Has anyone spotted any such degrees? While there are several for teaching Spanish (such as at MassterCursos), I only found a few, tangentially related programs from our favorite Mexican school:

    https://www.techtitute.com/us/school-of-languages/postgraduate-diploma/postgraduate-diploma-communication-strategies-english-classroom

    https://www.techtitute.com/us/education/professional-master-degree/master-teaching-language-literature-high-school

I know this is the English-language thread, but it'd be interesting to see if there are any other TESOL/TEFL type programs in English or Spanish.

Sorry to hear that. Unless you can find a way around Azteca by going through UCN directly, you are probably stuck. But at least you are almost done.

As others have noted, the Apostille is a glorified notary that diploma mills often promote as if it were some official government recognition of the school. It is simply a recognition that the documents are what they purport to be (eg a diploma or transcript). Won't help with foreign credential evaluation and is pretty worthless and apparently massively overpriced. Perhaps the Azteca rep gets a cut?

Upside is that you didn't invest much and end up with a degree from a recognized Nicaraguan University.

Well, I wouldn't disagree. Slow and with apparently a few costly surprises. But let's face it, there are probably a number of hands in the pot. UCN needs compensation for giving someone a piece of paper that they don't seem to have much oversight over, Azteca needs a cut, and the international Azteca guy has to make a living. From the outside it seems a rather complicated system with many fingers in the pie.

In addition to the overpriced Apostille, maybe you can get them to throw in an autographed photo of Daniel Ortega, a Sandanista Travel Mug, and a t-shirt that says "You had a revolution and all I got was a PhD and this lousy t-shirt"

Sounds like your degree has been kidnapped and a ransom note has been received.

Yes they have…. I’ve emailed them a couple of times asking only for an invoice for the shipping fees instead of the apostille since there is no value in that for US citizens and I have received no response.

If I were you, I would get the apostille. A while ago, I completed some credits from a school that went out of business but I have the apostille. This saved few times as the apostille shows that the diploma is legit and the school existed. If Azteca or UCN go out of business, you are in the dark, it is very hard to get documents when the schools are out of business. The apostille shows that the documents that you have, have been authenticated by the local government so they are legit. In the US or Canada, authentication is normally done by the school but in countries like in Nicaragua, it is not very clear who is going to keep your records if the school goes out of business.

If this apostille keeps me from having to pay to have school documents sent each time to different employers or evaluators with being allowed to scan and send these documents in the future, I could see the benefit of it.
