I'm honestly unsure what you're so happy about.

Oh, I'm enjoying the spectacle in my quiet way. McConnell helped shepherd the $1.7T spending bill through the lame duck Senate despite mouth foaming threats by McCarthy because McConnell knew full well that the incoming House GOP majority would prove incapable of governance.

If you ever wondered what nihilism looks like in practice, this is it.

Regarding the title, a Democrat getting more votes for speaker is not really the surprising thing. It is just the expected outcome of McCarthy not having the 218 votes to be elected and the Republican margin in the House of Representatives being very slim. That might be surprising from the perspective that McCarthy is the ere apparent and couldn't get any closer to the 218 necessary votes than he did. It appears that too many Republicans just have a personal dislike of McCarthy. Now that could also be considered surprising because the Republicans that didn't vote for him are the folks that McCarthy has been pandering to begging groveling and pleading with for the past few weeks. I can't feel bad for him though. I think he's a sniveling coward for sucking up to Trump after January 6. It would have been better for the country and the Republican party and probably even McCarthy if he had not and instead went along with McConnel in trying to rid the party of Trump.

Someone could move to change the rule to require a plurality rather than a majority. That would bring the possibility of a Speaker Jeffries into play, which would likely get the rebels to knock it off. Right now, they can do what they want with little harm and no risk.

It won't happen, and McCarthy will not be Speaker. The next Speaker will be someone not currently being considered.

Kevin McCarthy is a POS traitor. I hate that MF.
Kevin McCarthy said Putin was paying Trump. He also was caught on tape saying Trump should resign after Jan 6th.

Kevin has less than a 50% chance of becoming Speaker of the House now.

Trump is now in play for Speaker of the House. Steve Scalise is the most likely to win if POS doesn't win. My fav is Jim Jordan.

Oddly enough, Trumped backed Kevin McCarthy when that swamp creature came groveling to Trump to win his support.

What happens when Trump pulls his support and blows up the Internet when he endorses someone else?

I don't give a crap how long this takes. Not like anything will get done, but spending bills that cause more inflation.

And that makes McCarthy the traitor.... Um, okay. Cool story, needs more dragons.

I'm surprised Jeffries is only 4% odds now. I would think that would be easy money to bet on tonight and sell in the morning for a quick 50%+ gain.

And Trump winning at 3% odds. You could bet against that, but it's risky. He might use the Speaker of the House as a stage to help him run for president.

We all know Dems vote blue no matter who, so don't expect them to back McCarthy. Though I wouldn't be surprised if the traitor goes and tries to make deals with the Dems to get votes.

If we throw Trump's name in the mix, here are the results.

Jim Jordan does NOT want to be Speaker and nominated Kevin McCarthy on the House floor for Speaker and is voting for him every round.
Jim Jordan wants to be Chairman of Judiciary, but he can’t because 19 Republicans are not supporting Jim Jordan by voting for McCarthy.

You can even get 5% support??? LOL Houston, we have a problem here.

George Santos has volunteered to step in based on his previous experience as Speaker of the House.

I see your joke there. lol

"When I said gay, I meant I had a gay thought so I identified as gay for that moment in time."
"When I said I went to a private school, I meant I went to visit that private school and listened to a few words a teacher said once time"
"I was planning to go to NYU"
"I did work for Goldman Sachs, just not as a paid employee"
"He's a proud American Jew since if you trace back your blood-line back to Adam and Eve, everyone is a Jew"
    And finally...
"When I said experience as speaker of the house, I meant I have experience speaking inside of houses"

I think it's hilarious what George Santos did. More power to him.

Since when do Dems care about lying? I wonder why they acted like they were upset.

BTW Matt Gaetz reported to Capital Police that Kevin McCarthy is a squatter for occupying the speaker of the house office without being elected

An attempt to seat Trump would be interesting, not because the House would elect him (I don't think it's likely) but because someone would surely file suit for a declaration that he is not eligible to hold public office due to having engaged in violent rebellion against the United States. We'd get a final judgment one way or the other.

Back of the envelope arithmetic here...McCarthy is muttering about getting people to vote "present". Problem with that is neither the Freedom Caucus nor the Democrats want McCarthy as Speaker. If enough mainstream GOP members vote "present" to break the deadlock, Jeffries will win, not McCarthy!

4th vote has failed! These Republicans are wilding.

Kevin McCarthy is betting the Dems will vote present because they will soon become lazy and want to go home. Also, the Dems could stop showing up to vote.

Now considering Jeffries could win with under 218 votes, it's a dangerous game to play.

"A speaker can win with fewer than 218 votes if not every member shows up, or if some vote present."
    https://www.axios.com/2023/01/03/house-speaker-vote-mccarthy

As much as I hate to say it, I think in the end, Kevin McCarthy pulls this out. He gives concessions to the holdouts and gets 218 votes or wins with under 218 votes.

The betting markets have Kevin McCarthy at only 35% odds to win!!! Steve Scalise is 37% odds to win, with the markets predicting if Kevin McCarthy steps aside, then Steve Scalise will win.

Hakeem Jeffries is only 4% odds so far but that could change if a major event happens.

One bet is to bet against Steve Scalise and then for Hakeem Jeffries. That would be a net 33% gain.

Another bet is to vote against Elise Stanik winning which would be 7% gain.

This situation probably be resolved in one week.

No, there is no reason at all for Democrats to vote present. There's no incentive unless McCarthy makes some serious promises and even then, he's Trump's boy and can't be trusted. If the Democrats do decide to help out, they'll do it by supporting some not-insane Republican in return for committee chairs and promises to freeze the Freedom Caucus out. The price will be very high. Basically, no investigations of the Biden Administration or Biden family let alone the January 6 committee.

The other option would be for a half dozen GOP members to announce that they're through with the circus and decide to become Independents. They vote "present" and Jeffries gets the Speakership.
