A company owned by Elon Musk will begin human trials of a chip implanted in the brain AP "Elon Musk’s Neuralink Corp. aims to start putting its coin-sized computing brain implant into human patients within six months, the company announced at an event at its Fremont, Calif. headquarters on Wednesday evening. Elon Musk announced tonight (Thursday) that a company he owns will begin clinical trials on humans with chips implanted in the brain in about six months. The chips are designed to allow patients with physical disabilities to move and communicate. In recent years, Neurolink has engaged in animal experiments. Now, Musk says, the company has submitted most of the required documents to the FDA to begin human trials."
I wouldn't mind it so much if it were marketed as separate chips to correct specific issues. Like, one chip for paralysis, one chip for blindness, and so on. But that doesn't appear to be the case as the concept is inclusive of those things but more far-reaching. Musk has a competitor, the co-founder of Neuralink (Max Hodak) who left last year. Hodak's version doesn't have to be drilled into the head (though I believe it still has to be implanted somewhere in the eye). The thing is, his company only has $160 million to play with, Musk has much more. So there is a good chance Hodak's device never reaches the market.
Nor I. But, if I were locked in, paralyzed with no way to communicate, I would consider it an asbestos life preserver thrown into the fires of Hell.
