Did anyone receive an email regarding the application for student debt relief?

Yes, it is legit. Yes, I submitted my application. Yes, I received my confirmation email.

Apply for Student Debt Relief During the Beta Launch
You signed up to be among the first to know when the Biden-Harris student debt relief application is available.

We want to invite you to be among the first to apply for student debt relief, by being a tester of the online application NOW before we officially launch.

Soon, we’ll be opening the online application with our official launch. But we would like you to help us test the site by applying now during our beta test. If you submit an application during this period, it will be processed when the site officially launches. You won't need to resubmit. If you have already applied and received a confirmation email, you do not need to apply again.

The application is a short online form. You don’t need to log in or provide any documents.

The application will be available on and off during this beta period. If you try and it’s not available, try again later. Once the application officially opens later this month, it will remain open until December 31, 2023.

    Beware of Scams

You might be contacted by a company saying they will help you get loan discharge, forgiveness, cancellation, or debt relief for a fee. You never have to pay for help with your federal student aid. Make sure you work only with the U.S. Department of Education and our loan servicers, and never reveal your personal information or account password to anyone.

Our emails to borrowers come from [email protected], [email protected], or [email protected]. You can report scam attempts to the Federal Trade Commission by calling 1-877-382-4357 or by visiting reportfraud.ftc.gov.

As an aside, it's shitty when politicians use billions of taxpayer dollars to promote themselves by attaching their names onto programs like this.

And yes, I felt the same way when Trump plastered his name all over the "stimulus" checks.

We had a Canadian PM who did this - and shitty is indeed the word. Every month, "Here's your old-age pension cheque from the HARPER Government." Somebody made him stop it. That person, to me, is a National Hero and should be awarded the Order of Canada.

I don't remember seeing an email from them but I did notice the site was active and I filled out the application.

I have not; I have zero $00.00 on my student loan. I was always paying out of my pocket tuition assistance, employers' tuition reimbursement, and VA GI Bill. Besides. Besides, I am not qualified anyway; there is a cap of $125K per annual salary.

I got the Beta email and I submitted my application as well. I agree with Steve - the relief is being provided by the federal government and supported by taxpayers. It shouldn't have names attached to it, just like the stimulus checks.
As I read the news today that Trump billed and continues to bill the US Secret Service exorbitant amounts for lodging his personal security detail at his own properties, endlessly profiting from his position and milking the US Taxpayer (like his father before him) - I'm just glad the giant government roulette wheel landed on my number for once.

So am I. Go for it. Might be your only chance to get something for your taxes. Here - Canada - not quite so bad. At least, for our taxes, we get health care -- and no premiums to pay. I think that's a big thing. I have friends in UK and mainland Europe. Same there.

Some 40 million folks have a student loan. I'd much rather see our politicians work on reducing the cost of college. But, in the meantime GET YOUR APPLICATIONS IN! ;)

    Another school doing its part...

"Lenoir-Rhyne University announced today a tuition reduction of 30 percent. The $13,000 drop in published tuition — from $43,000 to $30,000 — will apply to all new and returning, full-time undergraduate students beginning in fall 2023."

Fyi I had a meeting with a woman yesterday that works for JStor. I had been referred to her because I'm interested in getting more access to education into the jail and prison systems, and apparently she's working on doing that too. JStor is trying to make sure every inmate has academic research access, and she particularly is interested in making sure that it happens without inmates being charged for tablet use etc. We were bouncing ideas around and she's going to take some of mine to her higher-ups because she thought they were worthwhile. She brought up to me though that many people who are currently incarcerated are not able to access the student loan forgiveness application. This could be because they don't have access to a digital device, the website has not been whitelisted for them, or they have other challenges to filling it out. If anyone happens to know someone with a loved one or others who are incarcerated that have student loans, please make sure that you are helping people get the application filled out even if it's just helping over the phone.

Woke up to this in my inbox:

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

    (202) 401-1576 or [email protected]

Statement from Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona on District Court Ruling on the Biden-Harris Administration Student Debt Relief Program
U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona issued the following statement regarding today’s district court ruling on student debt relief :

"We believe strongly that the Biden-Harris Student Debt Relief Plan is lawful and necessary to give borrowers and working families breathing room as they recover from the pandemic and to ensure they succeed when repayment restarts.

"We are disappointed in the decision of the Texas court to block loan relief moving forward. Amidst efforts to block our debt relief program, we are not standing down. The Department of Justice has appealed today’s decision on our behalf, and we will continue to keep borrowers informed about our efforts to deliver targeted relief.

"More than 26 million borrowers have provided the information needed to process their applications for relief and 16 million applications have been approved and sent to loan servicers to be discharged when allowed by the courts.

"Separately, we remain committed to taking other actions to fix longstanding issues in the student loan forgiveness system and hold schools accountable for leaving students with mountains of debt and without the skills and preparation to find good jobs.

"Despite this decision, we will never stop fighting for the millions of hardworking students and borrowers across the country."

    ###

I have to say that between the earlier rollback of eligibility for some borrowers and now this - it makes the president and his team look incompetent in this matter, and it reminds me that if something seems too good to be true it probably is. It's too bad I'm not a Wall Street investment banker or one of the millions with PPP loans that don't need to be repaid. PPP Loan forgiveness: 953 Billion. Student Loan forgiveness: 300 Billion. Military budget?: 10 TRILLION. Priorities. I've always had mixed feelings about these things, but I figured the wheel goes around, and someday I'll get something that helps ME from the government, so in general, I'm glad when people can get what they need to get by to better times, you know, like golden parachutes or propping up their 6 figure income with a PPP loan because it's been a tough year.

Exactly. They got your vote, so that's all that matters.

The HEROs act was only meant for the military to delay student loan payments while they are fighting overseas and was never meant to be used for civilians.

Trump was trying to use student loan forgiveness to buy votes as well but dropped the idea when he was told it wouldn't work. So FJB and FDT for abuse of power through executive privilege.

With 60 votes needed in the Senate to break the filibuster, don't look for any education bill to pass anytime soon.

Federal court strikes down Biden’s student loan forgiveness program
    https://www.cnn.com/2022/11/10/politics/biden-student-loan-forgiveness-struck-down/index.html

“The program is thus an unconstitutional exercise of Congress’s legislative power and must be vacated,” wrote Judge Mark Pittman

“In this country, we are not ruled by an all-powerful executive with a pen and a phone,” he continued.

I agree. We don't have a dictatorship. At least not yet.

Indeed. Trump's pandering to this end was similarly wrong. The constitution places the power of the purse in the hands of our congress, not the president. That Biden's plan was administratively spurious and antithetical to the constitution is palpably obvious, as was his timing. What is strange to me is how many people have argued the legitimacy of student loan forgiveness on the basis of PPP loan forgiveness. Evidently, in the political and moral calculation of many, two wrongs do make a right.

The PPP loan argument is like the abusive boyfriend that beats his girlfriend so severely that he breaks her arm and has to take her to the hospital. Now he demands credit for paying the bill.

The government created the problem by shutting businesses down, so they deserve no credit for giving out PPP loans.

That's the Republican's partisan view. Here's the Democrat partisan view, at least my view. This lawsuit makes the Republicans look anti-student, anti-education, petty, and hateful. The appellate courts will hopefully correct this bad ruling within the next few months.
