Who has been saying that you can't go from a for-profit to a regional nonprofit to a public university and then to an Ivy Plus master's program with your doctorate from a decent public university?

Why don't you suspend him? How many warnings is he going to get? There's no point in having a TOS if it's never enforced.

    After this, zero more.

    That's a fair point.

It's not the thread that will get closed. Don't make me be a jerk, okay?

I care zero. Do whatever you wish! I don't get paid to be on here.

I don't know about it in the exact way you phrased it, but the spirit of believing that what Josh put up can't be done has been expressed here before and many times elsewhere. Reddit is a hotbed for such nonsense. Granted, the people who've said that sort of thing here haven't exactly been people whose information could be counted on--infrequent posters that usually only post with a teardown agenda--but still. I was exploded on right here at the board a few years(?) back because I corrected someone who said that you can't get into a state/public university with an NA or for-profit degree, which is of course untrue but that person believed it and was quite hot about being told it wasn't true.

Reddit is indeed a hotbed, for an astounding variety of nonsense. Judging from your experiences - and the occasional one of my own - Reddit is, at times, not the only such hotbed in town. All you, I and some of the others here can do is try -- it's a dark and lonely job, but somebody's gotta do it. Keep the nonsense level to a mildly annoying undercurrent, that is. Then again, with all its faults - this place is infinitely superior to Reddit, even at the most trying of times.

Am I the only one who gets paid to post?! Well that's certainly a revelation! Just kidding (of course).

Chris, and others I've followed in their educational journey, set the tone for what is the best this site has to offer
. Most people had no idea what distance learning is, or was, before University of Phoenix (or any other perceived "bad" player you care to name). And then it was somewhat frowned upon because of the shenanigans that they, and others, performed there, and the public has a tendency to lump every bad apple together just to rationalize it in their own minds. Then when the pandemic hit, everyone and their mothers in higher education was scrambling to get online curriculums up and running before they metaphorically lost their shirts. Now online/distance learning is even somewhat trendy. Have you seen some of the commercials from online schools lately?

But those of us who've monitored the distance learning sector, and know its long history, know what it can and cannot do as far as educating the individuals that pursue it. And maybe that's why we continue to stay on this site and continue to devote our precious time and energy to educate the visitors that come here daily to get answers to their questions. Because, maybe someone on this site helped us when we needed that help and we feel compelled to give back.

I've come across so many people who don't want to participate here because of the trolling. Trolling and constant, unprovoked attacks are neither educational nor helpful. This forum could help more people if it didn't push so many away. Individuals troll because of a personality disorder, not to pay anything back.

    The timing here is off.

The University of Phoenix got into many controversies over recruiting practices long before it became a DL powerhouse.

I see where you're coming from. I'm going way back in time to when U of P advertised in the classifieds in the Enquirer back in the early 70's. I consider that prepandemic. Maybe not so much in recent times but still in the modern age. At least it is in my mind. As to exact dates and times, I'll leave to the historians on here. Ha!

Interesting that you quote me and talk about trolls. I'm sure it wasn't deliberate. And it sure wasn't provoked. Just trying to add a little positivity to the negativity that sometimes floats around.

And if I may, it's easy to point out problems but tough to come up with solutions. I work and have worked with teens for decades and they can be masters at it. Why? Because they have no preconceived notions. The trick is to teach them as students to find a fix. There's a lot of smart people on here that can help with that. Just by using their prefrontal cerebral cortex, instead of the amygdala.

The purpose of my original post was to provide an example that those who go to Capella, University of Phoenix, Walden, etc. do not have to be handicapped by the "for-profit" status or any negative publicity. They can just as readily pursue an advanced degree at a prestigious university with hard work, discipline, etc.

Let's please try to stay on that topic. It was a POSITIVE post...not a negative post.

They were? It was founded in 1976 and didn't expand beyond Arizona until 1980.

An adult troll needs a licensed mental health professional. That can't be fixed on a forum.

Positivity is great when it's accurate and realistic; otherwise, it's just toxic positivity. There might be someone out there who got into a non-extension, Ivy League program with their Capella or Walden degree, but this isn't really an example of that. My educated guess is that the Rider MBA got the person into the Temple DBA, not the BS in IT from Capella. And, the DBA from Temple made the person competitive for the business program at Duke, not the BS in IT. There are examples of people going straight from a podunk state university to an Ivy League graduate program, and those podunk state universities were cheaper than Capella.

This guy was actually pretty successful without a degree. He's been in the tech industry for at least 14 years, and he was an engineer long before he finished his degree at Capella. He was also hired by his current employer as a technical account manager before finishing his degree at Capella, and it was probably because of his experience as an engineer and his certifications.

What happened your Jacksonville or Liberty's DBA/PhD in Business? Are you sure you are not going for another degree? Once you complete your Ph.D., you are one degree hotter. :D
